wawancara jhj di korean fun #41

CONCENTRATES ON ONE THING AT A TIME

JO HYUN JAE, HONEST AND FORTHRIGHT, LIVES A STRAIGHTFORWARD LIFESTYLE

Jo Hyun Jae is a man of few words, but I will try to convey as much of his feelings and words as possible to his fans.

Q: Which dialogues in 49 DAYS do you still find memorable up to now?
JHJ: More than the dialogues, I find more memorable the scenes where Song Yi Kyung (when her body is possessed by the soul of Ji Hyun) calling my name. Moreover, when I call her “Song”, I have to inject feelings into it as if it is her nickname.

Q: Favorite scenes in the drama?
JHJ: THere are three. One, when Han Kang hugged Ji Hyun while she has the appearance of Yi Kyung. Two, the scene when I went out with Yi Kyung after knowing that she is possessed by Ji Hyun (when they went back to Jinan). And last, when Yi Kyung (with Ji Hyun’s soul inside her) clung to the back of Han Kang (the back HUG).

Q: I heard that you have little to no sleep while filming 49 DAYS.
JHJ: Not just me, but all the actors… everyone, the director, the crew. We feel sleepy all the time, and very cold. We were also pressed for time. We have in South Korea what we call the “live broadcast”. It is basically “shoot on broadcast, filmed on broadcast” (Editor’s note: Meaning what is aired on the day of broadcast is sometimes filmed on the same day of broadcast). In terms of acting, as the drama progresses, the actors have to completely immerse ourselves into our characrter. Whenever Han Kang felt pain/sadness/have a hard time, I feel the same way too. But despite the difficulties encountered while filming, I still had a great time.

    .

I CHOSE TO BE A COMMON SOLDIER

Q: 49 DAYS is your comeback project after being honorably discharged from your military duties. While in the Army you volunteered to be an active duty or ordinary soldier rather than become an entertainment soldier. Didn’t you feel that you were injuring or causing harm (to your acting career) performing the duties of a common soldier (for 2 years)?

JHJ: I feel that when a South Korean man enters the Army, we should all be treated the same way, regardless of who we are or what we are outside the military. I think that when we enter the Army it should be with the conscious intent to learn to defend our country as a soldier. All South Korean men are required to render military service, so there is really nothing special about going into the Army. Also, being an ordinary soldier allowed me to experience a different life. If I had become an entertainment soldier, I would just be doing the same things that I have been doing as an actor. I felt that once I enter the Army it is better to leave that kind of life for a while; for me the mission of protecting our country as a soldier is very important. That’s why I volunteered to be a regular soldier.

    .

Q: I heard that while in the Army, you served as a dog soldier.
JHJ: Yes, I did. Not all units in the Army has a dog soldier. There are not many dog soldiers. The military should have sniffer dogs or reconnaissance dogs because there are missions that humans alone cannot do. I was a dog soldier since I started my military service. Not everyone can become a dog soldier. If you are familiar with dogs, or have experience in raising dogs, you may be selected to become a dog soldier. It is also important that you have raised dogs or have kept dogs by yourself for a number of years. Or, like in my case, if your superiors are able to determine that you really love dogs.

Q: Can you tame a savage dog in just 2 weeks?
JHJ: In the Army I was responsible for guard dogs. Our troop is responsible for guarding the ammunition depot. Guard dogs, by nature, are very keen. They need to be trained and nurtured properly so it can be in tune with its handler. No matter what kind of dog, as long as I live with it everyday, so I can train and nurture it to be in tune with me, I have the confidence that I will be able to tame it.

Q: I heard that your current pet is a dachsund by the name of Xing「シンイ」.
JHJ: Yes. Xing has been with me for 9 years now. My sister gave Xing its name. In Chinese, Xing means “star”.

WILL NOT ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES THAT WILL INTERFERE WITH ACTING

Q: During the 49 DAYS Fan Meeting you showed off your singing voice. People are saying that you have an awesome singing voice. Do you have plans of pursuing a singing career in Japan?
JHJ: There are no concrete plans. But I also feel that I should try it if given the right opportunity. However, I prefer acting to singing, so if singing would interfere with my acting career, then I will not pursue that anymore.

Q: You once mentioned that you would like to do a musical someday. What made you interested in doing a musical?
JHJ: Doing a musical will allow me to combine acting with singing. Besides, acting on stage is very different from the usual acting I do in front of the camera. I think it would also be good to explore other acting options.

    .
    ACTIVITIES IN JAPAN GRADUALLY INCREASING

Q: I heard that there is a likelihood that your activities in Japan will increase in the future.
JHJ: I am gradually increasing my activities here in Japan each year. Just last year we released the first issue of my fan magazine here in Japan. In between that, most of my activities here will be in the form of fan meetings.

Q: Unlike other celebrities, you don’t seem to take advantage of social networking and microblogging to increase your communication with your fans.
JHJ: Yes, you are right. I did post a little while filming 49 DAYS and while filming in China. But, I just can’t do it on a regular basis. I can’t help it, I get so immersed in the things I do. I am the type who has to concentrate on just one thing at a time. When I exercise, I just exercise. When I watch movies, I just keep on watching movies for a few days. That’s how I am (laughs).

Q: You are now over 30 years old. One could say that you are now of age to get married. What do you look for in a woman that you would marry?
JHJ: I just want someone who would cherish me and accept me as I am, and appreciate the things I do. In return I will cherish her and accept her the way she is, and appreciate the things she does.

Q: What Korean and Japanese food do you like?
JHJ: For Korean food, I like kimchi hot pot the most, because it can be consumed easily (or digested easily), then bibimbap. I also like fish, eggs and baked goodies. For Japanese food I like sushi, tuna, ramen, curry, tonkatsu… almost everything (laughs).

Q: What is your impression of Japan and the Japanese?
JHJ: I have visited Japan almost 20 times already. Anyway, I think the Japanese are very protective of the image of their country. The Japanese are very proper, they always abide by the rules. As for the place itself, from what I have seen I think it is a very clean place. Even the backstreets are beautiful and clean. I don’t see debris littering the streets.

Q: What is your impression of Japanese women?
JHJ: Kind and gentle. The women are very beautiful.

Q: Any message for your fans?
JHJ: First of all, thank you for all the love you have given our drama 49 DAYS. Thank you also for always encouraging and cheering me in everything I do. In the future, I will do my best to reward everyone’s love and support by doing better in my work. Lastly, I consider one’s health to be very important, so please, everyone, always stay healthy.

baik dialog memorable maupun scene favorit jhj di 49D, samaaaa kyk gw...#belagak nyama2in :hihi:

keren pilihan jhj untuk menjadi prajurit biasa ketimbang entertainment soldier :top:
dia berpikir semua pria korea yg masuk army sama aja, baik itu artis atau cuma rakyat biasa...ga ada perlakuan spesial dan diapun gak suka yaa dispesialin. jhj pengen mencoba pengalaman baru yg gak bakal didapetnya kalo memilih jd prajurit hiburan...
kalimat yg kusuka: for me, the mission of protecting our country as a soldier is very important. that's why i volunteered to be a regular soldier.. mantab kang :top: :cinta:

ga ngerti juga entertainment soldiers, tapi emang ada bagian itu, biasanya ertong2 kesitu larinya wkwkwkwk

ohya disitu juga jhj bilang ga bakal terlibat aktivitas yg mengganggu akting.. artinya akting msh numero uno bagi dia, meski suka dan bisa nyanyi, beliau kagak ada niat buat jadi penyanyi...
yaa baguslah, persaingan ketat sekarang neh :oghehe:

jhj jg tertarik drama musikal, weew pengen liat deh jhj beraksi di drama musikal :hahai:

ohya sblmnya kamu tanya jjove berapa kali terbit..
sekarang disamain ama majalahnya ssh, jadi empat kali setaun... woow bgt yah hahahaha

ga sabar nunggu yg terbaru, tema nya outdoor nih...jhj banget :cihuy:

betewe, artikel diatas dibaca semua ga?
mau lagi? gw dah nemuin brangkas penyimpanan jove vol satu...

Jadi tungu komen orang dulu :awas: :kaget drama musical Hmmm bgus juga :hihi: ya iya dia nyaman di depan kamera dari pada jadi penyanyi, sekarang pun dia harus mempunya sesuatu kalau bertahan di dunia nyanyi, paling joget gangnam style wkwkwkwk kayak gmana tuh Jhj Joget kayak gto, pengen ngeliat :cinta: kalau 4x 1 tahun, artinya 4 bulan sekali terbit dong :hahai: :sigh: kalau dri jove vol4 dia outdor dan ada kamping2nya, jadi aku agak ngerty lah, tapi konsep yang pengen di wawancarai jhj nya itu apa? itu bikin penasaran, bnyk2 terimakasih ama mom :makasih-g:

    :ohno: jhj gangnam style?
    ngebayanginnya aja ga berani wakakakaka

jhj pan spesialis lagu2 ballad nan mellow yah jd agak susah ikut persaingan para penyanyi, apalagi kpop didominasi boyben girlben #halah

hehe ngomongin guardian jadi kebayang lagi MV nya hahahaha, aduuh lagu sih bolehlah tapi dance nya itu lhoooo...kagak nahan wkwkw plaaak #ainami jahat hihihi

syukurnya meski asik di akting, jhj juga ga sepenuhnya ninggalin nyanyi...empat single nya cukup lah kekekeke berharap nambah sih, kalo maen drama lagi, semoga ngisi ost nya juga

ohya jove kluarnya tiga bulan sekali lah...setaun kan 12 bulan
    vol 1 kluar desember
    vol 2 maret
    vol 3 juni
    vol 4 september.....really can't hardly wait

    ------------------------------------

artikel dari jove59 vol 1 winter edition

    part 1

JOVE59 is Jo Hyun Jae’s Japanese fan magazine. Following is a short article from volume 1/Winter issue which was released on December 24, 2011.

“Who has not had a childhood? Of course he had one too. But his childhood is different from most people’s idea of a childhood. His childhood is not a happy one, but he did not rebel against it. He is the embodiment of the weak, simple, easily injured youth. If it were another person, he would have hurt those who have hurt him in the past. But that is not how he is.” – these are the words of the writer of LOVE LETTER as she described Andrea, JO HYUN JAE’s character in LOVE LETTER.

The roles JO HYUN JAE have portrayed so far have always been the one injured or hurt. Most of his past characters have always been youthful, but even when he started to portray mature roles, his characters’ heart is still not that of an adult, but still retained that pure, innocent and child-like quality. When you see him onscreen, one thinks that the image you see is very close to what he is in real life. The TV drama LOVE LETTER is his masterpiece, and the image that remains in the memory of so many people is one of child-like purity and innocence.

However, for an actor to be typecast in certain roles because of a fixed image can be a problem. Fans will always support the actor, but most viewers prefer actors to change, so there will be novelty. For an actor to have a certain fixed image is good, but only for the short term.

In order to break from being typecast, JO HYUN JAE continues to break through the image his fans have of him. Everyday he works hard, concentrating seriously on his work, changing a little bit with each new project. After being discharged from the Korean Army he starred in the drama 49 DAYS. After which he went to China to work on his first Chinese drama, the big-budget production drama KING ROUGE.

part 2 nya besok aja yaaa :hihi:

lanjut ke artikel part 2 nya yaa

    JHJ talks about China experience

Here is another article from JOVE59 volume 1 (Winter issue/December 24, 2011). In this article, Jo Hyun Jae talks about his experience filming KING ROUGE in China.

    .

Jo Hyun Jae would like to express special thanks to fans. Because of them he is able to work not just in South Korea, but also in China and Japan, and, hopefully, in other countries in Asia as well.

An interview after a long time, talks about recent developments.

Spent 3 months in China filming the TV series KING ROUGE. This interview was held less than a week after returning to South Korea.

Q: Please share with us some of your experiences while working in China.

JHJ: Mostly we filmed in the countryside. Most of the places where we filmed were not yet fully developed. But as an actor who still needs a lot of experience, I find filming in places like that very challenging and interesting. We filmed in various locations, so I need to adjust often. It was very interesting work.

Q: I understand that KING ROUGE is set at an earlier era of China. It must have been a new experience for you.

JHJ: Yes, it is. A different country, a different era. To have the history of another country as backdrop for a drama I am working on is a new and interesting experience for me. The actors who were in the drama with me are also interesting.

Q: The script is written in Chinese. So how did you deliver your lines while filming?

JHJ: I had the script translated from Chinese to Korean. I deliver my lines in Korean, later they will dub in Chinese. China is a very large country, people have different accents. To make the accent uniform, even actors from Mainland China have to be dubbed. So the key in acting in a Chinese drama is understanding not just my dialogues but the lines of the other characters as well. That way the language barrier will not become a big problem.

    Q. You must have spent so much time studying the script.

JHJ: We were filming everyday, from sun up to sun down. I didn’t have much time to study the script. But I had time to study it before filming because I received the whole script before filming started.

Q: In Korea, scripts are revised, sometimes are written, while filming is going on. Did that happen too in KING ROUGE?

JHJ: Nothing like that happened in KING ROUGE. I think writing/re-writing the script happens in South Korea only. I don’t think they do that in Japan either, based on my previous experience of working on a short Japanese drama before.

Q: Filming in China is a very fresh experience for you. Have you ever thought of working on a TV series in Japan?

JHJ: After my experience in China, I think I can work anywhere. Not just in Japan or China, but in other Asian countries as well. It doesn’t have to be absolutely just TV series and movies in Japan, or be a star in a drama in China. If I am offered a challenging role, in Japan or anywhere else, there is no reason not to accept.

    Part 3

Jo Hyun Jae - Han Kang and I Have Totally Different Personalities

Here is another article from JOVE 59 volume 1 (Winter issue released on December 24, 2011).

    .

Q: 49 Days had a very good rating in South Korea when it aired there. In Japan, it was also well-received. How significant is this drama to you?

JHJ: 49 Days is very important to me. Because of mandatory military service in my country, I could not work for a long time. 49 Days is my comeback project after being discharged from my army duties so it holds a very special place in my heart. Returning to work after a long blank period, I gave everything I could to this role.

    .

Q: Would you say you are satisfied with your acting in this drama?

JHJ: Hmmm satisfaction… I have never been satisfied with my acting. I know I need to work harder. I don’t think I have had a project where I can say I am 100% satisfied with my acting.

    .

Q: With regards your co-actors in this project, I heard that you knew some of them before you worked in this project. You and Lee Yo Won have worked together in the past. Is this true?

JHJ: Yes, true. I worked well with my co-stars in this drama. I worked previously with Lee Yo Won in another TV series. We also worked together on an MV. 49 Days is our third collaboration. Lee Yo Won is very friendly, easy to get along with, easy to work with. Soo Bin hyung* is also a friend for a number of years now, because of that filming with him was very easy. In the course of the filming, I also became familiar with the other senior and junior actors. They are all very pleasant people to work with. Filming was very pleasant, except for the all-night shoots… (laughs)

*Editor’s note: Our Hyun Jae is referring to actor Bae Soo Bin whom he always calls “Soo Bin hyung” which means “big/older brother Soo Bin”.

    .

Q: I think 49 Days is not a simple drama of good and evil. It made the viewers reflect on their life and other lessons it imparted. As the hero in such a drama how do you feel?

JHJ: I am just an actor trying to convey the scriptwriter’s message through my acting. All I wanted is be able to put that message across convincingly.

    .

Q: So when you read the script, you must have thought: “Ah, this is how I should do this part.” Thinking of the whole story, acting with the whole story in mind?

JHJ: Actually, I was not able to read the whole script in one breath (from beginning to end). I think, the scriptwriter was still thinking out the whole story up to the very end. Up to a certain extent, I couldn’t tell in which direction the script will go. So, I just played my role the best I could with the material I was given for a particular scene.

    .

Q: I was impressed by the respective speeches that you, as Han Kang, and Lee Yo Won, as Song Yi Kyung said in the last episode. But there are various arguments about the ending. How do you feel about the ending?

JHJ: If I speak in my role as Han Kang, I think the ending is just right. But if I were an ordinary viewer, I would be dissatisfied with the ending as well.

    .

Q: You don’t have any regrets about the ending?

JHJ: I always feel regret at the ending of my projects, regardless of the work.

    .

Q: Are you referring to your acting? Or the script?

JHJ: Sometimes my acting, sometimes the plot. I feel I don’t meet my own expectations for the role, I feel I could have done a little better, so I feel regret. As to the ending, it is not up to me to judge that. I feel it should be the audience who should judge if the ending is good or otherwise. Of course, some would say the ending is good, but some would not like the ending.

    .

Q: Your character Han Kang has a secret crush on Shin Ji Hyun… silently watching over her. Your portrayal of this character left a deep impression on people. Does the real JHJ have the same personality as Han Kang?

JHJ: Completely different (laughs)… How can people like him? (laughs)

    .

Q: You are a superb actor, Jo Hyun Jae – viewers are convinced that you and Han Kang have the same personality!

JHJ: I am happy that I have convinced them of that through my acting. I think Han Kang is just a character in a TV series, no one like that could actually exist in real life. Although I am not absolutely sure about that… Anyway, Han Kang and I have totally different personalities.

    .

Q: On the surface Han Kang is cold and has a bad temper, but behind the scenes is always helping and supporting Shin Ji Hyun.

JHJ: I do not like that he is always angry (laughs). He gets angry over the smallest things, always angry, bad tempered. If it is the woman I love, I will take good care of her and show her my love. I will not act as Han Kang did (laughs).

    .

Q: You will confess your feelings?

    JHJ: Yes! (laughs)

    .

Q: You said that you and Han Kang have different personalities. Didn’t you find it difficult portraying him? For example, Han Kang will say or do something that you yourself will not say or do. Didn’t you ask yourself: “Why would he say or do that?” There were no such thoughts as you portrayed Han Kang?

JHJ: Han Kang’s words and actions can be understood only when you see them from Han Kang’s standpoint. If I looked at Han Kang’s words and actions from my own point of view, then I would forever be questioning Han Kang’s actions. That’s why whenever I start filming I have to be totally immersed in my character so that I will be able to project the character’s thoughts and feelings, not my own thoughts and feelings.

    .

Q: I have seen some of your previous works. Watching you play Han Kang in 49 DAYS I can say that there is a difference in your acting this time compared to your past projects. I can’t pinpoint where the difference lies… let’s just say, you are more unrestrained this time?

JHJ: I feel the same way. Maybe it has something to do with age? (laughs) I feel more comfortable now than in the past, that is true. As time passes by, attitudes change, ideas change, views about life also change. And because of these changes, I feel more comfortable with myself, and it comes out in my acting.

    .

Q: This is my idea of the relationship dynamics of making a drama – the writer writes the script/story based on a vision, the director gives guidance to the actors based on the writer’s vision, while the actors’ portrayal of their roles is the visible portion of those behind-the-scene works. Then writer, director and actors discuss the script together to make sure that everyone’s understanding of the story is the same. Then the actors portray their roles according to the vision of the writer, and guidance of the director. Would you consider yourself the type of actor who just faithfully follows the vision of the writer and guidance of the director?

JHJ: I would say that for the most part I am the type of actor who follows the director’s guidance. There were instances in the past when I would make suggestions to the director if I feel strongly that my perspective on the character is the better option (Editor’s note: I think he’s talking about PD Lee Byung Hun of Seodong Yo, where JHJ made suggestions about his character and PD Lee agreed with him after some discussion). Here in 49 DAYS, the director asked my opinion on many aspects of my role to make it easier for me to play my part. I shared with him my thoughts about the character, how I see the character, how I would portray him. The director changed some scenes to adopt my perspective, but the whole story is faithful to the scriptwriter’s intent/vision.

    .

Q: The 49 DAYS director asked for comments/opinions from the actors?

JHJ: Yes, he did. And the director gave a lot of thought/consideration to the actors’ opinions. He adopted some of our opinions.
