What’s The Difference?

This is probably the first question many who have not used either one, would ask. The simple answer in my mind is that there really isn’t much difference. This is IF you don’t take into account things like QWERTY keyboards versus touch screens. This is because both the blackberry and PDA phones in general do come in either style so it’s not like QWERTY keyboards are only found in Blackberry handsets for example.

I used both the examples above only because i’ve managed to use both these specific models over the last 2 years so am only able to comment based on these models.

As a mobile phone, they are both easy to use and quality is great on both these types of phone. To put it simply, if you only wish to use these devices predominantly for voice calls, either one would serve your purpose. Sending SMS / MMS and general web browsing is achievable on both devices with the service provider being the only differentiator especially when dealing with download speeds as it is quite reliant on coverage and overall network capacity.

As for email, both support the push email functionality but is dependant on the office infrastructure set up to enable it on either handsets.

Battery Life

Seeing as both these devices are 3G and 3.5G capable, they both score pretty badly especially when comparing to the older generation phones which could go for 5 days with average usage before having to plug them into their chargers. It seems batteries these days can’t keep up with the growing power demands of these advanced hardware so its becoming more of a common practise to have 2 chargers supplied in the packaging when purchased from the shops. I typically use chat programs, SMS and surf the web quite a fair bit on these devices, the battery typically drains within the day so its now a habit of mine to charge them each night before i go to bed.

Well Is There Any Difference Then?

Yes there is but none related to the hardware it seems. Why do i say this? Here’s why.

PDA Phones can support push email functionality however in order for this to be enabled, your network administrator would have to acquire an Access Point Name (APN) from the telco provider, which would be connected to the office exchange server (assuming it runs on exchange). Only then will push email work on the handset otherwise you are left with standard POP email server access, which isnt utilising the push email functionality. You would simply be polling the email server via the POP address. Setting up the APN is a much cheaper option however and would appear to be the current trend that companies are going for given the current economic climate.

Blackberry on the other hand is much more cumbersome. Your network administrator would either need to set up a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) or a Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) account for you in order to start downloading work email. The former is what most companies go with but it tends to come with a large dollar value. The latter is the cheaper option but its not a viable option especially if the company houses quite a large employee base. Security becomes another issue with the latter option.

Recommendations

PDA Phone: I would go down the path of using a PDA phone if your company places tons of red tape around acquiring a blackberry, especially if it requires approval from every man and his dog. Chances are the network administrator would have already set up an APN for the company so there would just be a few minor provisioning tasks to be performed before you start getting emails pushed to your device.

Blackberry: Quite simple really. Go down this path if you either have alot of friends on it or if your company is happy to issue you with one. One of the advantages of blackberries is that it had security in mind, especially when a BES is implemented. BES administrators have the ability to wipe out a device remotely if you ever lose the device thereby preserving any confidential information that you may have had on the device. If you have lot of friends on it, thats an added bonus as you can use applications like Blackberry Messenger to communicate. It functions just like a chat program but you dont need to be online as you automatically are just by having the device. You can send and receive messages to friends all over the world and not cost you anything more than just your standard monthly data plan charges.

Whichever choice you make, the device itself will serve majority of your purpose. These 2 phones offer so much more functionality as compared to the standard voice phones that were so popular 3 – 5 years ago.

msh aja pada pake BB,gw jg nggk demen coz fitur yg minim nggk disesuain dgn harga...klw bwt ikut2an aja ya bwt apa...

 

wah gimana yah...gw sih ga terlalu pingin2 amat beli bb atau pda...gw udah cukup puas dengan nokia 6630 gw...karena tahan banting...sering jatoh tp tetep kuat udah 3 tahun lebih ga pernah ngadat, bahkan jatoh dari motor yg ngebut! TOP! (bkn promosi) klo gw beli bb n mengingat keseharian gw...wah ga ampe seminggu bakal ancur

org indo lucu yah, demi gaya, bb seludupan pun dibeli...meski di no nya ga ada pulsanya wakakakakaka...

 

wasted guyz.. mahal, tapi gitu doang.. masih bagusan smartphone biasa

 

ga punya BB gan, masih setia SE K800i tahan banting, BB belum tentu tahan banting...

 

Pulsa sebulan sekali diisi 10 rb aja mw di pasang di BB
buang2 duit ae...nion-70: masih setia ma W660... lw buat ym kan dah tgl instal aplikasi... bwt browsing jg dah ada Opmin... kurang apa coba...

 

di Indo... mau barang itu ada service resmi purna jual nya ato tidak, klo mahal jelas larisss manis... karakteristik org indo kan 'prestise dan pamer'.... inget kan jamannya nokia seri 9000 yg gedenya kyak HT ? anak2 SD bnyk pke tuh HP... pdhala tu HP di desain buat kalangan org kntoran.. bener komen tmn2 di atas, ktauwan beli PS, Laptop ato Apple..
