E3 2011: Modern Warfare 3: The Year's Most Relentless Shooter

How the next Call of Duty campaign is set to hook you from start to finish.

It's looming as the biggest gaming showdown of the year: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 versus Battlefield 3. Gamers are talking about it. EA's powerbrokers have made it crystal clear that DICE's game is spoiling for a fight with the industry's top dog. Yet while it will ultimately be the strength of each respective multiplayer experience that will have the biggest influence on determining the winner in this scrap (lavish marketing spends aside), both camps are keeping their online offerings under wraps for the time being. So for now, we can only gauge each title on the brief single-player demonstrations we've been privy to, and as far as campaigns go Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 appear to be decidedly different beasts.

The main difference appears to be this: Battlefield 3 puts you in the shoes of a soldier, while Modern Warfare 3 puts you in the shoes of an action hero. Not to say that Battlefield 3 isn't without spectacle – it clearly has its fair share of razed buildings and shockwaves rippling through city streets – but it also appears to have a lot more calm before each bullet storm.

Conversely, the two levels from Modern Warfare 3 that were recently demonstrated to the press indicate that Activision's game – more so than its predecessors – will rocket along from one set piece to the next, with nary a spare moment between fire fights to catch your breath and shake the ringing out of your ears.

In the game's Manhattan level you'll get violently knocked sideways in a Humvee, obliterate cover-hugging insurgents with the new XM25 grenade launcher (its rounds detonate in midair rather than on impact with a target), crash the stock market on Wall Street (and fill it with bullets), pilot the new Reaper UAV drone and rain Hellfire missiles down on rooftops packed with Russians, demolish a radio tower with an explosive thermite charge and indulge in a nail-biting dog fight with Russian Hind choppers through the upper regions of the Manhattan skyline.

Total running time of the events above: roughly fifteen minutes.

Apparently Modern Warfare 3 is being co-developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, but if we didn't know better we'd assume that blockbuster director Michael Bay had made an uncredited contribution to its design such is its breakneck pace and emphasis on putting bombast into each and every bomb blast. Whereas Battlefield 3 seems to simmer like The Hurt Locker, Modern Warfare 3 hustles along like Die Hard With A Vengeance. It's an FPS all right; in this case, a Frantically Paced Shooter.

Modern Warefare 3 also runs at a silky sixty frames per second, and each and every one of those frames is packed with enough eye candy to rot your eye teeth. The London level demonstrated culminates in a high-speed chase through the local underground subway system, with the player lurching around in the back of some kind of pickup truck in pursuit of a runaway trainload of terrorists. The player struggles to maintain a bead on the train as the vehicle zigzags in and out of tunnels and past train platforms crowded with terrified commuters, until eventually enough damage is inflicted upon the train for it to suddenly rear up from the tracks like a mechanical cobra before the level comes to an explosive end. Although this stretch of gameplay is entirely on rails (in more ways than one), it's undoubtedly a thrilling experience all the same.

The single-player is also just one element of an overall FPS package cleverly designed to gobble up your spare time. The campaign aims to bludgeon you about the head with incessant entertainment, the co-operative Spec Ops mode – with its new progressive ranking system – serves as a less intimidating wading pool to get your toes wet in the online community, and before you know it you're hooked on the multiplayer modes at large and snapping up DLC map packs as fast as Activision can supply them. At least, that seems to be the plan.

From what we've seen so far, it appears that Infinity Ward's loss of Vince Zampella and Jason West has been Call of Duty's gain – mainly because it's forced Activision to create a coalition of development teams to ensure Modern Warfare 3 keeps the franchise on top of the sales heap. If you were a betting man you'd back the brand power alone of Call of Duty against Battlefield 3, but while both games are on a crash course to compete for your FPS dollar this November, their apparently contrasting styles indicate that they can happily coexist.
