Lotus presents E21 at Enstone factory

The Lotus F1 Team has pulled the covers off its 2013 challenger, entitled the E21, at its Enstone factory. The outfit's latest creation, which will be piloted by Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean, has retained the 'stepped nose' design trait.

Launched via the Lotus YouTube channel, the E21 chassis features a number of visible bodywork changes compared to its predecessor. Aside from the unpopular nose step, sidepods similar to those seen on the double title-winning Red Bull RB8 have been implemented, while the rear of the car has been packaged more efficiently.

"I can assure you that we’ve done a lot, the whole team has been putting their heart and soul into this thing for quite some time," Lotus Technical Director James Allison explained to Sky Sports. "There’s a lot gone into it and it’s going to be an exciting car.

"The regulations for 2013 are very, very similar to 2012, so you can expect to see a lot of family resemblances. But the devil is in the detail and the detail in this car adds up to a lot of performance."

Small but effective tweaks have also been made to Lotus's livery. Although the black and gold guise remains for 2013, red is now a more prominent colour ahead of an expected deal with American technology giant Honeywell. The logo of new sponsor Burn - a member of the Coca Cola family - is also visible on the E21's front wing.

At the opening Jerez test, which takes place from 5-8 February, Grosjean will complete the first two days behind the wheel of the the E21 before handing over to Räikkönen.

Pirelli unveil 2013 F1 tyre compounds

MORE EXTREME PERFORMANCE FOR 2013 FORMULA ONE TYRES AND AT LEAST TWO PIT STOPS PER RACE A FASTER WARM-UP, LAP TIMES COME DOWN BY 0.5 SECONDS, MORE THERMAL DEGRADATION: THE KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW FORMULA ONE P ZERO AND CINTURATO TYRES.

NEW TYRES COMPLETELY REDESIGNED BY PIRELLI’S ENGINEERS, WITH A PERFORMANCE GAP OF AT LEAST 0.5 SECONDS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT COMPOUNDS.

THE GOAL: MORE PIT STOPS AND MORE OVERTAKING

THE NEW HARD GETS A NEW COLOUR: ORANGE

Pirelli begins the 2013 Formula One season with a completely revolutionised P Zero range for dry weather and Cinturato range for wet weather. These new tyres have been developed according to the wishes of the teams and the latest rules from world motorsport’s governing body, the FIA. The most recent evolutions benefit the compounds, which have become softer, the structures, which are more flexible and the shoulders, which have been reinforced.

The objective of all these innovations, which work closely together, is to improve performance and increase thermal degradation, to ensure at least two pit stops per race and open up more strategic options for all the teams.

The sidewalls also look different, with colours that are more immediately striking and a brand new marking: orange, which comes in place of last year’s silver to denote the hardest compound.

“The 2013 season continues the philosophy adopted by Pirelli last year in evolving the original 2011 range of Formula One tyres,” commented Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery. “The goal is to continuously set new challenges for the drivers and to ensure that all the teams start the new season on a level playing field when it comes to the tyres. Through accumulating more information with each grand prix last year, the teams eventually fully understood the tyres, after a spectacular start with seven winners from the first seven races. The result at the end of the year was races with less competition and sometimes only one pit stop. This phenomenon was also observed in 2011, disappointing many fans and prompting some of the teams to ask us to continue developing our tyres further this year, in order to provide a fresh challenge with something different. Our 2013 range of tyres mixes up the cards once more to help overtaking and ensure two to three pit stops per race.”

Computer Simulations And Thousands Of Kilometres Of Testing

The development of the 2013 P Zero and Cinturato ranges included thousands of computer simulations carried out by Pirelli’s engineers throughout the 2012 season, using sophisticated predictive software. These simulations, which were backed up by laboratory tests on the compounds, have been integrated with data collected during grands prix and the seven thousand so kilometres covered during five private tests with the Renault R30. Pirelli’s test car was driven by Jaime Alguersuari and Lucas Di Grassi at Jerez, Spa, Barcelona (for two sessions) and Paul Ricard (for a wet weather test).

The teams were able to sample the new P Zero Orange hard tyre during free practice in Brazil last November, but the debut for the complete new range will come at the first official Formula One test in Jerez at the beginning of February.

Higher Temperatures, Softer Sidewalls, Increased Performance

The defining characteristic of the 2013 Pirelli Formula One tyres is softer compounds all round, which will allow them to reach peak operating temperature faster and deliver lap times that are around 0.5 seconds faster than last year.

Swift evolution of Pirelli’s tyre technology has allowed the new hard tyre – the PZero Orange – to be roughly equivalent to last year’s medium compound. The tyre sidewalls are softer this year, but the shoulders are stronger. The effect of this is faster thermal degradation while the tyre’s peak performance window is extended. Traction is also improved, which translates into faster lap times, especially on the exit of corners and in combined traction areas, from braking to acceleration and vice versa.

The performance gap between the different compounds is now in excess of 0.5 seconds per lap, as opposed to last year when the difference was often smaller: particularly in the latter half of the season. Faster thermal degradation and a bigger performance gap between the compounds will encourage overtaking throughout each race.

11 Sets Of Tyres Per Car Assigned By BarCode

The Formula One tyres are designed at the Pirelli laboratories in Milan and produced at a dedicated facility in Izmit, Turkey. Having passed quality control and other checks, the tyres are then sent to Pirelli’s logistics hub in Didcot (United Kingdom) from which they are shipped out to all the different circuits. Once more, each Formula One car will have 11 sets of tyres available for the weekend, made up of six sets of the harder and five sets of the softer compound. In total Pirelli takes about 1800 tyres to each race.

Tyres are allocated to each team at random, as per FIA regulations, through the use of bar codes. FIA officials allocate the tyres to the teams, with no involvement from Pirelli in this process. Each tyre has a barcode embedded into its sidewall even before the vulcanization process, which effectively acts as the tyre’s ‘passport’.

The on-track Pirelli team will once more be made up of around 55 people this year, including fitters, logistics personnel, hospitality staff, and engineers. As has always been the case, each team will have its own dedicated Pirelli engineer.

McLaren launches new MP4-28 in Woking

The wraps came off McLaren’s 2013 car on Thursday morning, as drivers Jenson Button and Sergio Perez revealed the Mercedes-powered MP4-28 at the team’s UK base in Woking.

Following a cavalcade of historic machinery from McLaren’s past - the team celebrate their 50th anniversary this year - Button and Perez entered the McLaren Technical Centre driving the company’s latest road cars, before uncovering their new F1 challenger.

McLaren describe the MP4-28 as a deep and sweeping re-design of its race-winning 2012 predecessor in several key areas, most notably around the nose (now higher and stepped, but with the step covered by a 'modesty panel' as permitted by the 2013 regulations) and front suspension (now a pull-rod configuration following the trend set by Ferrari last year), the sidepod profiles and the rear bodywork.

“We were extremely strong throughout the whole of the 2012 season, but, for one reason or another, we couldn’t quite pull it all together to challenge for the championships,” said Button, who starts his fourth season with McLaren this year. “That’s something we want to address for 2013. I’ve seen just how closely everybody has been working together on this car, and I think we’ve got the basis for a very strong season.

“This year’s car is the best we’ve ever made - I know the engineers have left absolutely no stone unturned in wringing every ounce of performance from every available area. I cannot wait to get behind the wheel and attempt to carry forward the incredible legacy that lives beneath the skin of every single man and woman who works at McLaren.

“We’ll be working extremely hard during the pre-season to ensure we go to the first race with bulletproof reliability. Operationally, too, I think we’ve learned and developed from last year, and that will help us run a much smoother and stronger campaign.”

As well as a new car, Button has a new team mate for 2013 in ‘Checo’ Perez, who will start only his third season of Formula One competition this year, having joined McLaren from Sauber over the winter.

“For me, this is a great day,” said the Mexican. “In fact, every day this year has been great: I’ve been working hard with my new team to get everything ready for the start of the 2013 season - and it’s been an incredible journey to get to know this incredible organisation.

“Of course, I am fully aware of the steep slope ahead of me: it has already been an intense couple of weeks, getting to grips with a new team, meeting my engineers and mechanics, learning new ways of working and, of course, learning all about a brand new car - something I’ll need to do with just six days of on-track testing. It’s a big challenge.”

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh added: “For 2013, of course, we go racing to win. With Jenson and Checo, and this fantastic-looking new car, I believe we’re extremely well prepared for another competitive season. Jenson is driving better than ever - he’s the most experienced driver in Formula One, but he makes every ounce of that experience count: he’s peerless in his ability to read a race and one of the very fastest drivers out there. He’s a consummate professional, too, and will revel in working hard to drive this team through the year.

“Checo joins us after a sensational 2012 season and he’s immediately proved that he’s intelligent, modest, hard-working and, make no mistake; very, very quick. Of course, there’ll be a learning curve to overcome as he gets used to our organisation, particularly during the hustle and bustle of the early-season race weekends, but he understands that we are placing no pressure on him.

"This is an exciting time for the whole team. In our 50th anniversary season, I want Vodafone McLaren Mercedes to underline why we are the finest Grand Prix team in the world.”

The MP4-28 will make its track debut at the first pre-season test of 2013, which begins at the Jerez circuit in Spain next week.

German Grand Prix confirmed at Nürburgring

The German Grand Prix has finally be confirmed on the 2013 calendar, ending weeks of speculation. It was announced by Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone on Thursday that the race will be held at the Nürburgring on 7 July.

The Eifel venue was declared bankrupt six months ago, casting a dark shadow of uncertainty over the Grand Prix. However, after back-and-forth discussions between circuit organisers and Ecclestone, a deal has now been reached to save the race.

"I appreciate the Nürburgring and its history very much," said Ecclestone. "This circuit makes the highest demands on drivers and teams. I was very pleased to advocate the hosting of the Formula 1 race at the Nürburgring in order to sustain this traditional race track."

The Nürburgring agreement has ensured that the 2013 calendar will consist of at least 19 races, with a further, 20th Grand Prix, currently penned in for 21 July.

Ferrari reveal evolutionary F138 in Maranello

Ferrari have launched the car with which they hope to capture the 2013 drivers’ and constructors’ championships. The F138 - the name denotes the current year and the car’s V8 engine, which will be used for the last time this season - was unveiled at the Italian team’s Maranello headquarters on Friday.

With limited changes to the regulations for 2013, the F138 is an evolution of last year’s race-winning car, although every single part has been revised in order to maximise performance while maintaining the characteristics which were the basis of the F2012’s superb reliability.

Ferrari have retained the front and rear pull-rod suspension set-up introduced last year, refining it further for maximum aero advantage, while the car’s bodywork elements have been redesigned to allow for changes to the positioning and layout of the exhausts.

The rear of the car is much narrower and more tapered than before. The configuration of the front and rear wings derives directly from the last versions used on the F2012, partly because development of that car ran all the way to the final race of last season. However, significant modifications will be introduced to the car’s aero package in the weeks leading up to March’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

The drag reduction system (DRS) on the rear wing has been revised and optimised to make the most of the modifications to the sporting regulations that come into play this year, with use of the system now limited to the designated DRS zones in every session of the race weekend.

The kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) retains its location in the lower-central part of the car, a strategic choice which has always been adopted by the team, partly with the aim of ensuring maximum safety. A great deal of effort has gone into reducing its weight and size, at the same time improving the efficiency of some of its components.

On the electronics front, Ferrari have interestingly chosen to introduce - ahead of schedule - the single control unit that will be used in 2014. This has involved a lot of work to integrate and control all its features in terms of both software and hardware.

The F138 will make its track debut at the first pre-season test at Jerez in Spain next week, with Felipe Massa at the wheel. Team mate Fernando Alonso will get his first taste of the car at the following session in Barcelona from February 19.
