Despite City announcing a loss of £197 million last year – the biggest in football history – the club are ready to splash out around £24m on Athletic Bilbao and Spain star Javi Martinez.

According to the paper, "City hope to steal ahead of Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid to sign Martinez" - a classy player who has featured mostly in central defence this season despite having started his career as a holding midfielder.

City are to send scouts to watch Martinez play in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on Friday night before they start competing with the other big suitors for the 23-year-old.

"Martinez has a get-out clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract of €30 million, around £24m. All four suitors are expected to match that price but City feel they can tempt him to England and will blow away United with their wages kitty," says the Mail.

"At 6ft 3in, City see Martinez as the ideal man to help shore up their defence, alongside impeccable captain [Vincent] Kompany, the star of their title success this season."

To manager news and Roberto Di Matteo will quit Chelsea unless he gets the manager’s job on a long-term contract, according to The Sun.

There has been speculation that the most Roman Abramovich is willing to offer the Italian is a one-year deal as a 'trial' for the top job on a permanent basis.

Louis van Gaal has told Liverpool he wants the top job at Anfield and not the position of sporting director. Van Gaal insists he wants to coach again, not be stuck behind a desk. (The Sun)

Chelsea have released two more of their Champions League-winning team, with Jose Bosingwa and Salomon Kalou told to find fresh employment. Arsenal have emerged as contenders to sign Belgian star Eden Hazard. Hazard wants a summer move to the Premier League and was believed to be choosing between Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea. But Lille director Frederic Paquet revealed another club is also in the running for the £32m-rated playmaker – and the Daily Star claims it is the Gunners.

Gareth Bale has been offered a new £70,000-a-week deal to keep him at Spurs. Chairman Daniel Levy tabled the offer on Tuesday and also gave assurances about the club’s ambitions for the new season and potential signings. (The Sun)

Liverpool are reportedly in talks with experienced Dutch coach Louis van Gaal with a view to appointing him as sporting director.The often volatile coach has been spending the summer at his house near Albufeira in the Algarve, and the Telegraph understands that Ian Ayre, Liverpool’s managing director, flew out to meet him last week. Van Gaal is used to be in sole charge of a club, but Liverpool are seemingly attempting to lure him into a different role – that of the much derided position in England, ‘director of football’.

The inevitable Robin Van Persie gossip centres around the fact that a whole host of clubs – understood to be nearing 10 – are positioning themselves tactfully in anticipation of talks breaking down between the player and Arsenal. Sunday’s Mirror report that Manchester City are in pole position to sign the prolific striker with a blank cheque from the Etihad Stadium poised to secure the Dutchman’s services. The other clubs understood to be ready for talks are Manchester United, Juventus, Milan, Anzhi Makhachkala, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Internazionale. Anzhi are prepared to offer Van Persie a staggering £300,000-a-week, but the Dutchman has no wish to finish his career in Russia and a more than ‘competitive’ salary is on offer at City.

Another player being targeted by Roberto Mancini is Sunderland forward Stephane Sessegnon, with the 27-year-old understood by the Sunday Mirror to be keen on a move to a bigger club.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are set to sign Netherlands international Gregory van der Wiel from Ajax for £8 million, according to the Sunday Times.

Tottenham have had a £14m bid for Internacional striker Leandro Damiao rejected as Harry Redknapp attempts to bring the 22-year-old in to bolster his forward options.

Arsenal, Spurs and QPR are all poised to hold talks with Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero, according to various papers, after the 37-year-old dropped a big hint in admitting he will never join another Serie A side and that he likes London.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, the man who scored the last-gasp goal which brought City the title earlier this month, will reject a summer move to Real Madrid according to Monday's papers.

Also on Real Madrid's radar is Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, who has admitted he is aware that Jose Mourinho wants to sign him - though what he makes of that is entirely up to which newspaper you read. The Guardian leads its report by saying that the player "has indicated that he is happy to stay" at Chelsea, while The Sun's sub-headline is "Ivanovic unsettled by Jose interest".

Blackburn manager Steve Kean wants to sign Manchester United's young brothers Will and Michael Keane on loan, according to the Daily Mirror, with Alex Ferguson apparently eager to loan the England U19 duo to a local club in order to keep tabs on them more easily.

Norwich manager Paul Lambert will make a £1.4m bid for Leeds United's Robert Snodgrass (Daily Mirror), Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder Odil Ahmedov has openly stated that he wants to move to Arsenal, who were tracking him last summer (Daily Mail), while Southampton will offer a £2m plus Jason Puncheon to bring in Tom Ince from Blackpool (Daily Mirror).
