Dari sekian banyak games, hanya sedikit yang berhasil 'mengambil hati' masyarakat, sisanya langsung dilupakan atau ada yang tetap diingat tetapi karena games tersebut berhasil membuat kesal pembelinya karena games tersebut ternyata tidak sehebat yang digembor2kan ketika promo.

Beberapa games lawas tetap eksis dimainkan hingga kini seperti Falcon 4.0, Freelancer, Baldur's Gate, Warcraft III, Counter-Strike dan banyak lagi. Apa yang membuat games tersebut bertahan melewati ujian waktu? Mereka berhasil memiliki loyalis karena: gameplay yang bagus, kemudahan modding, dukungan dari pengembang/penerbit dan beberapa faktor lain.

1. Diablo II

Widely hailed as the greatest action RPG of all time, Diablo II has legions of clones and followers, but none have come close to gripping the enthusiasts as much as Blizzard's powerhouse. You can get both Diablo II and its expansion, Lord of Destruction, plus strategy guides, at the link above for $40.


The game features five character types, each with its own range of abilities, but it's the interface that made Diablo II, and its predecessor Diablo, what they are. So move, you simply click. To attack, click. You can access various functions like a map or your special abilities through hotkeys—or you can click.
While Diablo had something of a story, Diablo II is far more plot-driven, involving taking on evil itself, and takes place throughout four acts. Lord of Destruction adds two character classes, a new campaign, and much more to the mix.

Keeping Diablo II alive, besides its core gameplay, is a host of mods. You can find them all over the Web simply by wielding the power of Google, but a good place to start is Diablo II Sector's Mods directory. You'll also find hacks, bots, and many more downloadables for the game.

Of course, single-player gaming only goes so far, and Blizzard still supports Diablo II multiplayer via Battle.net. And there's still a thriving Diablo II community, playing and trading items with their Realms characters (as opposed to "Open" or locally-stored characters).

Even as Diablo III is in development, don't look for Diablo II to fade away just yet. The upcoming sequel doesn't yet have a release date. If you crave action-RPG clickety-click frenetic gaming, look no further than Diablo II

Mech games haven't been the same since MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries. The BattleTech franchise fizzled after its release, though it should be noted that Smith and Tinker, a company founded by FASA pioneer Jordan Weisman, bought up all of the rights to FASA IPs from Microsoft.

That said, the community has kept MW4M alive and kicking, or stomping as the case may be. The giant-fighting-robotic-vehicle genre isn't dead yet, thanks to mods, mods and more mods. The biggest mod studios are NetBattleTech HardCore, and MekTek.net Development. The latter's MekPak 3 features more than a score of new mechs, new weapons, new maps, and lots of other goodies to keep the dream alive.



The main game itself isn't anything of a slouch, either. Set during a civil war in the BattleTech universe, the protagonist, played by you, earns a living by doing jobs for different factions. While it's not exactly a sandbox game, you do get some control over your mission choices, and how you act as you play makes a difference. The more good guys you harm, the fewer honest, upstanding missions will be available to you.

MW4M multiplayer features up to 24 players duking it out per server, though the statistics engine (Zonestats) is no longer available. Tournament play is sporadically available at MechWarrior Leagues.

While it works fine in Windows XP SP2, to get MW4M to work in Vista 64-bit we had to set the Compatibility options for the executable to XP SP2. To do this, find the executable wherever you install(ed) it (it's called MW4Mercs.exe), right-click it, click Properties, click Compatibility, fill the top checkbox, and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down list.

3. People's General

The news page of the People's General site hasn't been updated since 2002. You can, however, still get the game and a number of mods at the link above. Note that most of the links at the site linked above are dead, but the downloadables are still available.



People's General was created by defunct, legendary strategy game developer SSI, and further developed by a gang of others loyal to the cause. It's a 2D wargame with lots of different scenarios available, it's friendly enough to jump into with minimal documentation, and it's detailed enough to please the mighty wargaming grognards who still search for the perfect addiction.

Each of the downloadables you'll find contain links to a number of scenarios and campaigns from the US Civil War to World War II and more—just jump in and start playing. You can right-click units for details about them. Left-click to select and again to move them, and if they're in range, click on an enemy to attack.

Purely turn-based, People's General demands strategy, and lots of it. If you plan to win against the surprisingly cunning AI, you'll need more than RTS reflexes to get it done. Check out the strategy guide, and the FAQ, to learn more about the game, and how to beat it.

It's StarCraft; what more is there to say about it?

Blizzard overhauled the languishing RTS genre with this amazing sci-fi magnum opus. Instead of featuring two or three mostly-similar races, it went way out on a limb and made the factions extremely different: the Terrans, Protoss and Zerg require unique thinking to master. Some observers, however, have noted the curious resemblance to some of the races from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe.



It's remained alive since its release in 1998 through pure passion, a successful expansion called Brood War, and mods galore. You can find a handful of mods at Strategy Informer.
StarCraft was played in professional gaming tournaments for years after its release. Blizzard is working on StarCraft 2 (finally!) but doesn't have a release date just yet. That'll keep the masses returning to the original.

While other games have tried to ape its uniqueness by offering diversity in the warring factions in their RTS titles (most recently came Universe at War: Earth Assault), none have done anything even remotely like the Zerg Swarm or the bizarre Protoss. It's as if the Terran were only included there so new gamers, coming off Command & Conquer or Total Annihilation would have some semblance of normalcy through which to adjust to the unfamiliar climate.

5. Fallout

Fallout isn't Fallout 3. The original is a top-down RPG with very few action elements. While the two share the same funky, post-apocalyptic spirit, the original still has a number of loyal followers. We tracked one down and chatted via IRC to find out why, oh why, would you still play the old, graphically inferior original when Bethesda's masterpiece is so popular?



Steve, who declined to provide his last name, typed, "the original is a pure RPG. There's no action, no reflexes, you're outside the body not inside."
But Fallout 3 did carry VATS over to soothe the demand on reflexes, didn't it? Steve said, "it works, sorta, but you gotta let it recharge and dodge or aim or whatever while it does."

What else keeps Steve coming back to the long-remembered original? "Just the feel, it's different if you really play the two. Plus back then it was so original and not like what we saw before except maybe some really old 8-bit games like Roadwar 2000 or whatever."

This guy's been around.
Fallout certainly was an amazing achievement. Setting a game after a nuclear war, and then populating the world with believable characters and a compelling narrative, while also making it somewhat of a sandbox game, was genius, and it shows by the fact that the game is still popular. In addition, it sports a dark humor that seems to be lacking in Fallout 3. So however good the new game is, the old one still draws in new users.

The Infinity Engine, a top down RPG engine that was the basis for many a game in years past, remains hugely popular. Forget Neverwinter Nights 2; some players still feel the Baldur's Gate series is the pinnacle of role playing on the PC, period.



If you're still into BG or its sequel, Baldur's Gate 2, or any of the expansions, or Icewind Dale, or what have you, you owe it to yourself to visit the Pocket Plane Group, a site dedicated to keeping the Infinity Engine alive with mods galore.

There you'll find a vast collection of completed mods, FAQs, modding tutorials, forums, and a bunch of other stuff to keep the Infinity dream alive. Don't expect mods for every RPG under the sun, though. To steal a Q&A directly from the Intermediate FAQ:

Q: Why don't you have mods for Planescape: Torment / Icewind Dale / Icewind Dale II / BG1 without Tutu / NWN / Temple of Elemental Evil / Morrowind / KOTOR / Wasteland / Ultima III: Exodus / Ultra-Pong / Backgammon?
A: For both story and technical reasons, Baldur's Gate 2 lends itself better to the type of modding PPG tends to do. Creating NPCs for the other Infinity Engine games, for example, is considerably less convenient for both modders and players. And historically, all of the PPG modding staff has been most interested in creating projects for BG2.

The passion at Pocket Plane Group for Baldur's Gate and its sequel is unimaginable. Its fans like these that are the true reason that great games never truly die

It's not pretty, with its pinkish background, but Planet Warcraft's WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos area is full of information on Blizzard's long-living real-time strategy. WarCraft, of course, was one of the most appealing RTS titles in the era of the original Command and Conquer and Red Alert titles. Eschewing tanks, soldiers and machineguns for orcs, axes and arrows, it mixed clever humor into the RTS world and saw instant success.



Of course, it spawned sequels. The third, WarCraft III, came out not long before the worldwide phenomenon known as World of WarCraft, which itself has stolen billions of hours of time that could have been productive. But we digress. Plenty of RTS freaks still play the hell out of WC3, and the maps database at the aforementioned Planet site is extensive, to say the least.

To further increase the longevity of WC3, Blizzard released an expansion called The Frozen Throne. But users have taken it from there. Be sure to check out The Hive Workshop, a repository of mods and discussions of all things WC3.

The single-player game can get tough. If you're having trouble, check out the Cheats area of Planet WarCraft—but don't expect to dominate multiplayer with the codes it offers. They don't work unless you're playing by yourself.

Until another non-MMO WarCraft title appears, expect WarCraft III to prosper. It still looks fantastic on modern systems and runs on Windows Vista 64 without a hitch.

8. Battlefield 1942

When you think of DICE's amazing Battlefield games, often one concept comes to mind: Desert Combat.

Widely considered the greatest mod for any of the Battlefield games (which include Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and expansion packs), this BF1942 mod is stunning to play.



But besides Desert Combat, what keeps people playing BF1942? The incredibly optimized engine that runs on almost any PC? The enormous multiplayer community that won't part with the game, even in the face of multiple sequels? Who knows? Who cares? BF1942 is alive and kicking, and that's a good thing.

Now, Desert Combat isn't the only mod available for the eminently moldable game. Be sure to aim your browser at Strategy Informer for more mods and maps to keep the battle going.

BF1942, of course, is the quintessential multiplayer WWII first-person game, in which players can run about as soldiers, hop into vehicles like tanks and planes, and attempt to wrest control of various strategic points from the enemy. Similar in nature to other BF games, it seems to be the one that will outlast them all.

DICE, of course, has gone on to other things (for instance, the frenetic Mirror's Edge), but its legacy is clearly sealed in a single, amazing title.

Freelancer started life as an ambitious, spiritual sequel to the seminal space shooter Privateer. An oddball combination of space action game, trading and exploration, with a nod towards roleplaying. The game featured a mouse interface for flying and combat, unlike previous similar games, which usually required a joystick to be successful.

The game that actually shipped turned out to be somewhat less than promised, as is often the case with overly ambitious games. The trading system was broken, with no real economic underpinning and fixed prices, so you could establish fixed trade routes with guaranteed income. Like an RPG, some locations meant instant death, although the storyline would guide you up the difficulty tree to the endgame, involving mysterious alien interlopers trying to take over human space.



But you didn't have to follow the story. You could go rogue, but a pirate, explore, take on missions. It was a semi-open world, with numerous planets, gorgeous (for the time) graphics and multiplayer, either LAN or over the Internet. You could even play the single player campaign in co-op mode with friends on the net.

Freelancer didn't do as well as expected initially. But the game proved highly moddable, and there are numerous mods available. The Discovery mod extends the game, with the latest beta version adding large numbers of new areas and a new, playable faction. The mod makers host their own roleplaying server, even enforcing faction rules in PvP. The mod even allows you to fly huge capital ships.

Another ambitious mod is Freeworlds, based on the Star Wars universe, and featuring impressive new artwork, including the ring-shaped Mon Calamari shipyard.

More mods exist than we can name here, so if you're interested in others, two sites to check out are The Starport and Lancers Reactor.

Freelancer runs without any major hitches in Windows XP. Windows Vista takes a little work. Installing it means running Setup as administrator. The game then installs just fine, but you'll want to run it in Windows XP compatibility mode, and as administrator. If you want to play online, you'll need to track down some tools, including the Freelancer Mod Manager. The chief mod you'll want is either the Freelancer List Server Patch or the Freelancer Global Server workaround, since Microsoft's global server has long since vanished. Otherwise, you won't find any Internet servers.

Also online play is very sensitive to antivirus programs under Vista. The game will not connect to any visible server, for example, if you're running Norton Antivirus. ESET (Nod32) and the various versions of AVG seem to be okay.

While it takes some work to get running, you'll encounter rich worlds to explore, entertaining combat and lots of loot.

10. Allegiance

Multiplayer space combat doesn't have any right to be this good, especially when it's absolutely free. All you have to do is create an account, and you're off.

Best controlled with a joystick, Allegiance is a game of epic faction wars that you can play however you please. Join a side and fight for your honor (each faction has its own unique ships to choose from, right up to player-controllable capitol ships). You can go so far as to build space stations.



Allegiance is easy to learn, complete with offline training missions and online subordinate missions that allow you to pick up the skills and strategies you'll need to advance in the burgeoning game. Beware, though, this is a sim. It's less Wing Commander and more Falcon 4.0 in space. There's a learning curve—but it's well worth your time to master it.

More than just a game, Allegiance is a huge online community. As I pasted that link, 42 players were online. This isn't a wisp of some online experiment; Allegiance is here to stay. The combat is furious, the strategy is deep, and the play is fantastically fun.
