Kekalahan semifinal kedua lewat adu penalti setelah tahun 1998.

Tapi overall it's a great world cup, the team still young dan sudah membuktikan diri. Jadi kita bisa have big hope in the next euro and world cup.

Runner Up World Cup 2010 South Africa dan 3rd Place Winner World Cup Brazil 2014. --> Great Achievement.

Congratz Belanda, hopefully next bisa Juara. Maju terus !!!

    Bye-bye Euro...
Uda habislah sisa-sisa kejayaan generasi robben dkk...
Cukup ironis, dikala jatah peserta euro ditambah Belanda malah kesulitan bersaing nembus Euro 2016...:swt:

    Total Football to Total Failure

It was back in 1974 when, the Dutch legendary Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michel (RIP), introduce to the world the so called "Total Football". A style played by doing intelligent and effective short passes, involving all the players. Technique and passing ability is top notch. Dominate the opposition, keep the possession and attack. A beautiful way to play football. The results reflected the effectiveness of Total Football. They got to the final of that 1974 World Cup, and do it again in 1978. Since then Holland rise as one of the World Football Power by playing the Total Football style and creating one of the best Youth Academy, which produce best football talents.

The world will remember the generation of Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Koeman in the 80's - 90's where Holland finally won their first and only international trophy until now, the Euro 1988. Managed by Rinus Michel (RIP) again. Van Basten goal in the final against USSR will be remembered by football fans around the world, forever.
After that golden generation, then another generation of football greats is produced in the form of Bergkamp, Stam, Van Der Sar and De Boer's brothers (and many others). Dennis Bergkamp world class goal in 1998 quarter final against Argentina is another great memory for Dutch fans. Even though this generation best achievement is to reach the semifinal of World Cup 1998, and ended the campaign as 4th place; but no one can deny that the team consisted of world class players with unquestionable quality. It can be reflected from the role-important of the respective players have on their clubs.

The success didn't stop there. By 2006 we've seen the transition from the 98 World Cup class to the younger generation. The like of Robin Van Persie, Wesley Sneijder, Van der Vaart and Arjen Robben is introduced to the world.
Fail to impress in the World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008; this generation reached their peak in 2010 when they successfully reached the 3rd final of the World Cup in South Africa (and by losing it become the first country in the history to lose 3 World Cup Finals without winning it), and last year, the almost identical team managed to won a 3rd place in World Cup, Brazil 2014. They did show a great, champions-worthy performance, especially in the games against Spain and Brazil.

By 2014, Holland is the most High-Profiled, Successful Football Team in the world who never actually Won a World Cup. The achievements are 3-time finalist (1974, 1978, 2010), one-time 3rd place (2014) and one-time fourth place (1998) in World Cup and Winners of 1988 European Cup.

With all that said, nobody ever thought that the Netherlands would not be participating in European Cup 2016 in France. With almost a same team, different coach, and one and a half year after the 3rd place World Cup winner, nothing could go any more wrong to the team than what did happen in reality.

The way the team played, with that kind of mentality, and the lack of talents leads to the most embarrassing qualifying round ever played by the Dutch.

The failure is even more embarrassing given the tournament has been extended from 16 to 24 teams -- meaning that the team could still finish in the top two to qualify while third would result in a playoff place.

But the Dutch team can't even manage that -- finishing below the Czech Republic, Iceland and Turkey, which booked its place in the finals, the prize of being the best third-placed team in the nine-group qualification phase.

    What happened ?
Is Total Football is not relevant anymore ?

From my perspective, it's not the Total Football but rather the Failing of the Football System in Holland it self.
The quality of Dutch league right now is nowhere near English, Spain, Italy or even Germany league. Some say money played big parts in it, but is it ??
The league where the huge talents of the world used to play in now has turned into a football playground for the "under-performing" or "prepare to retire" players.
The youth system which have produced world-class talents as described before has now changed into a mediocre players standard academy.

There's 2 Deciding Factors (in my view) that led to the disastrous campaign of European Cup 2016 Qualifying Round.

    1. Deterioration of Dutch Football Academy

The famous Dutch Youth System, especially Ajax's, produced the world best talent for over 40 years since 1970s. But lately the quality has declined so much up to a level where we will mostly saw Dutch players play in a mediocre-relegated-level club. (Hi to Leroy Fer and Wijnaldum).
Look how far the Dutch has fall from her grace.

KNVB needs to review how to improve the Youth System and How to improve the quality of the Dutch League. You can't offer a "once great, now not-so-much" Products to investors. Accept the reality that football is an industry right now.

    2. Team's Quality is Not Enough To Play Total Football

Both Bert Van Marwijk and Louis Van Gaal succeed to bring the Dutch team to over perform themselves by being pragmatic. It doesn't have to be pretty but they got results. They accept the fact that we don't have the quality enough to play pretty, but we have the quality to win (at least almost) a World Cup by defend well and make a good counter-attack.
Van Marwijk push this pragmatic view too far in the WC 2010 final against Spain, but at least we're in the final of a World Cup. I'd ask De Jong to make that crazy tackle hundreds time again if it can get us to final.

I remembered that Van Gaal directly changed the formation from 4-3-3 to a more pragmatic 4-5-1 formation once Kevin Strootman was injured. He knew that we don't have a player who can balance the team without him and if he insisted to play the total football style, Dutch will suffer.

Even Spain, with the world best Football Generation-Ever cannot keep on playing a beautiful game when their players is not at peak anymore. "An aging generation trying to play the way they did is foolish" I said, after we trashed them in the last world cup.

Total Footbal is to be played when the team have enough quality from the up front to the last man standing in front of goal.
Our team right now is a mix of --experienced aging - inexperienced-mediocre talent-- players. As sadly as it is, it is the fact,
and our present team is just not Good Enough.

    And actually one more thing.
We lose too many penalty shoot-out on a deciding round all this time.
1992 European Cup Semifinal - Lose Penalty shoot-out to Denmark
1996 European Cup Quarter Final - Lose Penalty shoot-out to France
1998 World Cup Semifinal - Lose Penalty shoot-out to Brazil
2000 European Cup Semifinal- Lose Penalty shoot-out to Italy & Miss 2 penalty kick inside 90 minutes play
2014 World Cup Semifinal - Lose Penalty shoot-out to Argentina

By the way, some trivia :
    1. Guus Hiddink actually coached Netherlands and reach the semifinal of the World Cup 1998, he also coached South Korea in 2002 with also a same result. Both team ended 4th place.
He then successfully place the destiny of failing Dutch team 2015 to the hands of Danny Blind. Smart..

    2. Louis Van Gaal the manager who bring Holland to their 3rd place finish last year in Brazil and become the national hero; was the country's No 1 Enemy back in 2001 when he ridiculously fail to qualify Dutch for World Cup 2002 (Guus Hiddink coached South Korea and bring them to semifinal on that time)

    3. Dennis Bergkamp-generation attend 2 World Cups and 4 European Cups along their international career. Of those 6 tournaments, they managed to lose 4 of it on a penalty shoot-out. Bad luck or Mentality?
