    Monohoshizao
    [IMG]
    Owner Sasaki Kojiro (Ganryu Kojiro)
Source Japanese Book 'Go Rin no Sho' (Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi)

    Descript.
A sanjaku sword (3 shaku) said to have been carried by the famous Japanese swordsman, Kojiroh Sasaki. It boasts an unusually long (an approximately 94cm) and heavy blade for a Japanese sword, and it takes an extraordinart man to even draw it from its scrabbard, much less wield it in combat. Etimology word Monohoshizao; A monohoshizao is a bamboo pole used for drying clothes.

    Story
April 13 in the seventeenth year of Keicho, 1612.
On this day, a duel between Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro took place on the Ganryu islet (commonly known as the Funa islet at the time) in the Kanmon Straits. The head of the Hosokawa clan in Kokura officially set up this duel.

There are several theories on Kojiro's upbringing. However, most theories state that he was born in the province of old Echizen. He took Tyujou-ryu lessons from Toda Seigen. During his lessons, he used a long sword and became an expert swordsman of it. He then learned from Kanemaki Jisai.
Consequently, he reportedly initiated the Gan-ryu.

Kojiro wandered throughout provinces with the ambition of entering government service with his individual style. He accumulated a lot of fight experience with famous swordsmen on his way. He was never defeated.

Yoshikawa Eiji described Kojiro in his youth as follows: a tall, attractive swordsman with a long sword named "Monohoshizao" on his back and who wore a flashy kosode and a violet string in his long front hair.

Finally, Iwama Kakubei recognized his swordsmanship. He was then appointed to a post as an instructor in swordsmanship. Through this, he had realized his dream. His "Ganryu" was so popular that it attracted not only provincial people but also outsiders. On the other hand, Nagaoka Sado who had learned swordsmanship from Munisai (Musashi's fatherin-law) made a trial to appoint Musashi as an instructor in swordsmanship. Such assistance from Nagaoka Sado helped in the realization of the duel between the two.
The Ganryu islet in the Kanmon Straits was selected as the site of the duel in order to avoid any trouble caused by crowds of spectators. On the day of the duel, the departure of any ship including ferries and even fishing boats was prohibited.

The appointed time was 8:00 am.
Kojiro wore a white silk kosode and a stunning scarlet sleeveless haori. He prepared for the duel against Musashi with an approximately 94cm long "Monohoshizao" in his hand.

However, Musashi did not appear at the appointed time.
It was after 11:00 am and the sun was about to reach its zenith when Musashi arrived at the Ganryu islet. Musashi had constructed a wooden sword with a length of 1.39m by carving an oar with his small knife on the way to the Ganryu islet.

On leaving the boat, Musashi dashed to the shore cutting through the water with the tip of the wooden sword he had just made.
Kojiro also dashed to the shoreline, drawing "Monohoshizao" and discarding the scabbard.
On observing Kojiro's action, Musashi said 'Kojiro. You are a loser. A winner would not throw away his scabbard'.
Musashi was on the ocean side of the shoreline, with the sun behind him.
Oppositely, Kojiro was showered with sunlight reflected off the surface of the sea but he then crossed the swords with Musashi.
At the instant the long sword of Kojiro seemed to hit Musashi between the eyebrows, the wooden sword of Musashi struck Kojiro's head. Kojiro instantly collapsed. Kojiro's slash did not reach Musashi and only cut his headband.
Thus ended the duel between Musashi and his strongest rival, Sasaki Kojiro.
After confirming the death of Kojiro, Musashi bowed to the spectators and left Ganryu islet.

    Story
    ....
Before long he met a leader armed with an iron spear and carrying a sword slung across his back, riding a curvetting steed, and leading ten
other horsemen. Without uttering a word Zhao Yun rode straight toward
him and engaged. At the frst pass Zhao Yun disarmed his opponent
and brought him to earth. His followers galloped away.

This fallen offcer was no other than Xiahou En, Cao Cao’s sword-bearer. And the sword on Xiahou En’s back was his master’s. Cao Cao had two swords, one called “Trust in Heaven” and the other “Blue Blade”. Trust in Heaven was the weapon Cao Cao usually wore at his side, the other being carried by his sword-bearer. The Blue Blade would cut clean through iron as though it were mud, and no sword had so keen an edge.

Before Zhao Yun thus fell in with Xiahou En, the later was simply plundering, depending upon the authority implied by his offce. Least of all thought he of such sudden death as met he at Zhao Yun’s hands. So Zhao Yun got possession of a famous sword. The name Blue Blade
was chased in gold characters so that he recognized its value at once. He stuck it in his belt and again plunged into the press. Just as he did so, he turned his head and saw he had not a single follower left. He was quite alone.

    Story
    Escape from Dong Zhuo
While in reality Cao Cao did leave Dong Zhuo , the tyrannical warlord who held the hostage in 190 to form his own army, the ''Romance of the Three Kingdoms'' went a step further to describe Cao Cao's attempted assassination of the latter:

Since Dong Zhuo deposed the eldest son of the late and placed in the throne , his tyrannical behavior had angered many court officials. One of the officials, Wang Yun , held a banquet one night. Halfway through the banquet, Wang Yun began to cry at the cruel deeds of Dong Zhuo. His colleagues, feeling the same anguish, joined him.

Cao Cao, however, laughed and said, "All the officials of the court – crying from dusk till dawn and dawn till dusk – could you cry Dong Zhuo to his death?" He then borrowed from Wang Yun the Seven Gem Sword with the promise that he would personally assassinate Dong Zhuo.

The next day, Cao Cao brought the precious sword along to see Dong Zhuo. Having much trust in Cao Cao, Dong Zhuo received the guest in his bedroom. Lü Bu, Dong Zhuo's foster son, left the room for the stable to select a fast horse for Cao Cao, who complained about his slow ride.

    Sword of Peleus
    Owner Peleus
    Source Greek Myth

    Descript.
A magic sword that makes its wielder victorious in the battle or the hunt.

    Story
Peleus was the son of Aeacus, King of Aegina. He was one of the Argonauts who accompanied Jason on the quest for the Golden Fleece. His most famous son was Achilles.

Peleus and his brother Telamon killed their half-brother, Phocus, and had to flee Aegina. Peleus went to Phthia, where he was purified of his crime by Eurytion and married Eurytion's daughter, Antigone. When he and Eurytion participated in the Calydonian boar hunt, however, Peleus accidentally killed Eurytion with a spear during the hunt, and had to flee Phthia.

He went to Iolcus, where he was purified of this second homicide by Acastus, the country's new king. In Iolcus, Peleus participated in the funeral games of Acastus' father, Pelias, and lost a wrestling match with Atalanta, the maiden warrior and huntress. Acastus' wife, Astydameia, fell in love with Peleus, but he repulsed her advances; she sent a message to his wife, Antigone, telling her that Peleus was to marry the daughter of Acastus, and Antigone hanged herself.

Astydameia also told her husband that Peleus had attempted to seduce her; Acastus then took Peleus on a hunting trip, hid his sword, and abandoned him. The Centaurs attacked Peleus and would have overwhelmed him, but Chiron (one of the Centaurs) returned the sword and Peleus repulsed the attack. Peleus got his revenge by attacking and pillaging Iolcus and then killing Astydameia; he dismembered her body and marched his army between the pieces.

After Antigone's death, Peleus married the Nereid Thetis. All the gods attended the wedding and brought magnificent gifts, including armor made by Hephaestus and a pair of immortal horses from Poseidon. Thetis and Peleus had a son, Achilles; Thetis deserted the marriage after Peleus interrupted her attempt to make the infant immortal by placing it on a fire. Peleus then placed Achilles in the care of the Centaur Chiron, who raised him.

There are differing accounts of the end of Peleus' life. In one, the sons of Acastus expelled him from Phthia and he died. In another, he was reunited with Thetis and became immortal.

    Sword of Death

    Descript.
A grey sword that can kill a person if you just cut a lock of their hair off.

    Story
The swords that are now known under the name of mystic are the result of a curious alliance. Three cultures allied against a common enemy: a relentless progression of ogres. A gathering of mages and alchemists from the three civilisations forged these swords blending their respective speciality. The result was the rise of swords with mystical powers: a surface wound could cause death, even to an ogre.

It is described as having a plain, black handle and a long, sharp, and cold blade.

    Story
How Arthur fought with Rome and was crowned Emperor.
THEN the King did do call Sir Gawaine, Sir Bors, Sir
Lionel, and Sir Bedivere, and commanded them to go
straight to Sir Lucius, and say ye to him that hastily
he remove out of my land, and if he will not, bid him*
make him ready to battle, and not distress the poor
people. Then anon these noble knights dressed! them-
selves to horseback, and came to a greenwood, and
they saw many pavilions set in a meadow, of silk of
divers colours, beside a river, and the Emperor's
pavilion was in the middle, with an eagle displayed
above. To the which tent our knights rode toward,
and ordained Sir Gawaine and Sir Bors to do the
message, and left in a bushment Sir Lionel and Sir
Bedivere. And then Sir Gawaine and Sir Bors did
their message, and commanded Lucius in Arthur's name
to avoid his land, or shortly to address him to battle.
To whom Lucius answered and said, Ye shall return
unto your lord and say ye to him that I shall subdue him
and all his lands. Then Sir Gawaine was wroth, and
said, I had liefer than all France fight against thee.
Then a knight named Sir Sainas, nigh cousin to the
Emperor, said, Lo, how these Britons be full of pride
and boast, and they brag as though they bare up all
the world. Then Sir Gawaine was sore grieved with
these words, and pulled out his sword, and smote off
his head ; and therewith turned their horses and rode
over waters and through woods till they came to their
bushment, whereat Sir Lionel and Sir Bedivere were
hoving. The Romans followed fast, on horseback and
on foot, over a champaign unto a wood ; and there was
a recounter, for the bushment brake on the Romans,
and slew and hew down the Romans, and forced them
to flee, whom the noble knights chased unto their
tents. Then the Romans gathered more people, and
there was a new battle, and Sir Bors and Sir Berel
were taken. But when Sir Gawaine saw that he took
with him Sir Idrus, the good knight, and pulled out
Galatine, his good sword, and smote him that l^d
Sir Bors and took Sir Bors from him, and Sir
Idrus likewise rescued Sir Berel. Then began the
battle to be great; that our knights were in great
jeopardy, wherefore Sir Gawaine sent to King Arthur
for succour, and that he hie him, for I am sore
wounded. But anon Sir Gawaine and his fellows gat
the field, and put the Romans to flight, and after
returned and came with their fellowship in such wise
that no man of worship was lost of them, save that
Gawaine was sore hurt. And on the morn the King
sent all the prisoners into Paris under the guard of
Sir Lancelot. Now turn we to the Emperor of Rome,
which espied that these prisoners should be sent to
Paris, and anon he sent to lie in a bushment certain
knights and princes with sixty thousand men, for
to rescue his knights and lords that were prisoners.
And so on the morn as they should pass through
a wood Sir Lancelot sent certain knights to espy
if these were in the woods to let them. And
anon they returned and told Sir Lancelot that
there lay in wait for them three score thousand
Romans. And then Sir Lancelot with such knights
as he had, and men of war to the number of ten
thousand, put them in array and met with them and
fought with them manly, and slew many of the
Romans. But Sir Lancelot fought so nobly that no
man might endure a stroke of his hand, but where he
came he showed his prowess and his might, for he
slew right down on every side ; and the Romans and
Saracens fled from him as the sheep from the wolf or
from the lion, and put them all that abode alive to
flight. And so long they fought that tidings came to
King Arthur, and anon he graithed him and came
to the battle, and when he saw his knights, how they
had vanquished the battle, he embraced them knight
by knight in his arms, and said, Ye be worthy to
wield all your honour and worship ; there was never
king save myself that had so noble knights. Now
leave we King Arthur and speak we of Lucius, the
Emperor, the which, when he heard how King
Arthur's knights had won the field, anon he sent forth
a king, which hight Sir Leomie, with a great army,
and bade him hie him fast tofore, and he would follow
hastily after. King Arthur was warned privily, and
sent his people to Sessoine, and took up the towns
and castles from the Romans. Then the King com-
manded Sir Cador to take the rearward, and to take
with him certain knights of the Round Table. So
King Arthur disperpled his host in divers parties, to
the end that his enemies should not escape. When
the Emperor was entered into the vale of Sessoine he
might see where King Arthur was embattled and his
banner displayed ; and he was beset round about with
his enemies, that needs he must fight or yield him,
for he might not flee ; and then he did command his
trumpets to blow the bloody sounds, in such wise
that the ground trembled and dyndled. Then the
battles approached and strove and shouted on both
sides, and great strokes were smitten on both sides,
many men overthrown, hurt, and slain; and great
valiances, prowesses, and appertyces of war were that
day showed, which were over long to recount the noble
feats of every man, for they should contain an whole
volume. But in especial, King Arthur did as nobly
with his hands as was possible a man to do; he drew
out Excalibur his sword, and awaited ever whereas
the Romans were thickest and most grieved the people,
and anon he addressed him on that part, and hew
and slew downright, and rescued his people ; and he
slew a great giant named Galapas, which was a man
of an huge quantity and height ; he shorted him and
smote off both his legs by the knees, saying, Now
art thou better of a size to deal with than thou wert,
and after smote off his head. There Sir Gawaine
fought nobly, and slew three admirals in that battle.
And so did all the knights of the Round Table. Thus
the battle was great, and oftsides that one party was
at a fordele, and anon at an afterdele, which endured
so long, till at the last King Arthur espied where
Lucius the Emperor fought, and did wonder with his
own hands; and anon he rode to him, and either smote
other fiercely, and at last Lucius smote. Arthur thwart
the visage, and gave him a large wound. And when
King Arthur felt himself hurt anon he smote him
again with Excalibur that it cleft his head, from the
    summit, and stinted not till it came to his breast;
and then the Emperor fell down dead, and there ended
his life. And when it was known that the Emperor
was slain, anon all the Romans with all their host,
put them to flight, and King Arthur with all his knights
followed the chase, and slew downright all them that
K.A. B they might attain. And thus was the victory given
to King Arthur, and the triumph, and there were
slain on the part of Lucius more than an hundred
thousand. And after King Arthur did do ransack the
dead bodies and did do bury them that were** slain
of his retinue, every man according to his estate and
degree that he was of. And them that were hurt he
let the surgeons do search their hurts and wounds and
commanded to spare no salves nor medicines till they
were whole. And then the book telleth how King
Arthur overcame the Saracens and took many cities
and much land until at the last he came into
the Vale of Vicecount among the vines, and from
thence he sent unto the Senators to wit whether
they would know him for their lord. But soon after
that, on a Saturday, came unto King Arthur all
the Senators that were left on live and the noblest
Cardinals that then dwelt in Rome and prayed him of
peace and besought him as Governor to give licence
for six weeks for to assemble all the Romans and then
to crown him Emperor with chrism, as it belongeth
to so high estate. I assent, said the King, like as ye
have devised, and at Christmas there to be crowned,
and to hold my Round Table with my kni^liN, as me
liketh. And at the day appointed he came into Rome,
and was crowned Emperor by the Pope's hand, with
all the royalty that could be made, and sojourned there
a time and established all his lands from Rome into
France, and gave lands and realms unto his servants
and knights, to every each after his desert, in such
wise that none complained, rich nor poor.

The hilt was nothing elaborate. It had a plain iron cross guard and a black wound grip that had obviously seen much use. The pommel was a round iron globe which was adorned with one inlaid red gem. The iron was dull and pitted. It was a very old sword.

    Story
That night I couldn’t sleep and had got up to avoid unnecessary tossing and turning. I stood looking out of my bedroom window. It was a blustery night. The skies were clear apart from a few fleeting clouds that were eerily lit by a full moon. The gusts of wind were whipping the trees and even the streetlamp seemed to sway a little bit. The street was empty and all that moved was debris propelled by the wind.

Suddenly a figure appeared in the light of the streetlamp. A black robed, hooded figure that seemed to absorb the light of both the moon and the streetlamp. It was impossible to see if the figure was a man or a woman. It carried a long object, wrapped in a tan coloured leather wrapping, bound by strands of rope. It had just suddenly appeared and now it stood under the lamp looking around as if trying to get its bearings. Suddenly I saw the hood tilt and although I couldn’t discern any facial features or eyes I knew it was looking straight at me. I knew it as certain as if the figure had stood right in front of me.

It started to move. Slowly at first, as if still unsure of the direction to take. Its hood occasionally turned from side to side and once or twice it stood still and looked around carefully. Then the figure was at my door and I heard a soft knocking. I hesitated. Should I answer? It obviously knew I was in so there was no sense in hiding or pretending I didn’t hear. Again there was a soft knock on the door. I slipped on a sweater and pants and stepped into a pair of slippers. Softly I went downstairs to the front door. I turned the lock and opened the door.

“Quiet!” A voice hissed. “Let me in.” I felt a push against the door and for a moment I considered closing it again. The voice had sent chills up my spine. But it was to late. The dark shape slipped past me giving the impression of smoke being sucked up a chimney.
“Close the door!” The voice commanded softly.
“Now look here…” I said but I got no further than that.
“Shh.” And my voice was cut off. My lips continued forming words but no sound came. “If he hears us we’re doomed!”
I closed the door softly while I turned round to look at the stranger.

The shape was no more distinct in my hallway than it had been under the street lamp. The robe it wore was completely hiding any features and the hood obscured the face. The package it had now slung over its shoulder proved to be a leather wrapped sword. I could see its hilt sticking out of the leather. The hilt was nothing elaborate. It had a plain iron cross guard and a black wound grip that hadobviously seen much use. The pommel was a round iron globe which was adorned with one inlaid red gem. The iron I could see was dull and pitted. It was obviously a very old sword.

“You observe the sword.” The figure said softly, reverently as it took the sword from its shoulder and held it before my eyes. “This is Arondight.”
I shook my head, the name meant nothing to me. I stood there gazing at the sword. It had a hypnotic effect on me and I couldn’t tear my eyes from it.
“Arondight, the sword that has brought down a King.” Then the figure wailed “The sword that destroys love.”
I started out of my reverie of the sword and looked at the figure. The wail had finally revealed a woman’s voice. I glanced at the front door as if who ever it was that pursued this sword would come barging in.
“Don’t worry.” The woman said. “Arondight is silent now. It has stopped calling out for him. I think it has perceived prey and decided it could do without its master for a little longer or its master has already found us and has ordered it to be still. In which case…”
I shuddered but I still could not speak. Either from fear and shock or because of some magic spell.

The figure had started to unravel the leather sheet slowly revealing the sword. There was no scabbard and the metal of the blade was as dull as the metal of the pommel and cross guard. The jewel in the pommel, which was just visible behind the woman’s hand emanated a dim glow. As the last part of the leather sheet fell away from the sword it sang with a metallic voice.

“Behold Arondight.” The woman said while she raised the sword. “Behold the sword that wooed Guinevere and destroyed the King. It has devoured many a heart in the ages that have been since.” She held Arondight above her head, point down. “Behold thy doom!” She suddenly cried and before I could move, the sword came down with a hungry power all of its own. Its metallic twang rose to a crescendo and as if in a dream I saw the point connect with my body and sink just behind the collarbone and the first rib, straight at my heart. The woman shrieked in an extacy of blood and suddenly the front door flew open. A gust of wind swept through the hallway and while my eyes started losing focus I thought I saw a man standing in the doorway. A powerful man, clad in a knights armour, carrying his helmet under his arms. I had just time to realise that there was no blood spurting from the wound as I had expected, just a slight trickle. Nor was there any pain. Then a deep, bellowing voice cried:
“Guinevere! I have finally caught up with you. This is the last time you take an innocent heart with my sword. Give it back!” These last words were shouted with such force as to make the doors in the house rattle. I could just make out the figure in black cowering and retracting the sword from my body. A body that had now become quite separate from my spirit. It fell to the floor while my spirit kept watching the scene in disbelieve. The black robed woman held on to the sword for a few more seconds, deliberating whether to hand it over. Then she swept back her cowl and long blond hair flowed from it. A strong, beautiful face with fierce eyes blazed, rather than looked at the knight.
“You have betrayed me!” She wailed. “You have betrayed me and my husband, the King!”
“You know full well who has betrayed the King!” The knight said calmly, who I now understood was Lancelot. “Give me back the sword and lets return.”
Guinevere stood defiant for a few moments, gripping the sword with both hands, her knuckles white. Than she sighed and relaxed her grip.
“You know it’s all just a game don’t you?” She purred while she handed over the sword.
“To you maybe, but not for the poor hearts you have taken these last few ages.” The knight answered.
Guinevere mumbled something under her breath and reluctantly started to follow the knight who had turned and left the doorway. Just before she crossed the threshold she turned and addressed my spirit, not giving my body, which now lay bleeding profusely at our feet, a second glance.
    “Coming?” she said, winking.

    Hofud
    Owner Heimdall (White God/Bright God)
    Source Norse Myth

    Descript.
This sword combines two abilities when wielded by The Bright God.
    1. It slays Frost Giants with but a single hit.
    2. It has the Vorpal blade ability as described in "Greyhawk" but with the absence of the anti-magiccircle.

    Story
Heimdall, called also the White God. He is the son of nine virgins, who were
sisters, and is a very sacred and powerful deity. He also bears the appellation of the Gold-toothed, on account of his teeth being of pure gold, and also that of Hallinskithi. His horse is called Gulltopp, and he dwells in Himinbjorg at the end of Bifrost. He is the warder of the gods, and is therefore placed on the borders of heaven, to prevent the giants from forcing their way over the bridge. He requires less sleep than a bird, and sees by night, as well as by day, a hundred miles around him. So acute is his ear that no sound escapes him, for he can even hear the grass growing on the earth, and the wool on a
sheep's back. He has a horn called the Gjallar-horn, which is heard throughout the universe. His sword is called Hofud (Head).

    Lobera
    [IMG]
Owner Saint Ferdinand III of Castile
    Source Spanish History

    Descript.
The blade is smooth, double-edged, and round-pointed ; on both sides for two-thirds of its length it is grooved, like most swords of that time. Inside both grooves are certain signs or letters, engraved and gilded, which the Conde de Valencia reads as the words one side says, "Ladivs Eoris", the other says, "Inovs Davor". This somewhat cryptic inscription, the learned antiquary explains as being part of the motto of St. Ferdinand, which may be roughly translated " Let your yea be yea, and your nay be nay." The hilt is of the sixteenth century, and was the work of Salvador de Avila, a swordmaker of Toledo, who died in 1539.

According to Don Juan Manuel, Duke of Peñafiel, in his book : Libro de los ejemplos del conde Lucanor y de Patronio, it was the sword of Fernán González and it's a sword of great virtue.

    Story
The symbol of Saint Ferdinand III power as a king was his sword Lobera.
