A question and answer with HRT's new Team Principal Luis Perez-Sala

Q: You arrived at HRT in July as a sporting adviser. What are your feelings about taking on the team principal role?

The owners of HRT offered me the opportunity of advising them and it felt an interesting challenge. It is a great honour for me that the new owners have placed their trust in me to take on the bigger responsibility. It is an important challenge to be at the head of the team, even though it is a small one, and build a project that will be viable in the future and that we can all feel proud of. I will try to contribute my experience so that the goals we've set ourselves become a reality, never forgetting to be humble and knowing that we have a lot to learn and much work to do.

Q: You raced for Minardi, a small team. How has F1 changed since then?

I have very good memories of my experience with Minardi. Since then, Formula 1 has evolved a lot, mainly technologically in aspects such as aerodynamics and electronics. Back then, it was already very professional but now the teams have considerably enlarged their structures and it's all a lot more sophisticated. And there are still a lot of people from back then working in F1.

Q: How do you think the F1 world and the public perceive these changes?

We're a small team and sometimes it's hard to realise what that entails. Still, especially on a national level, I think people perceive positively the change in direction that the team has been taking these last few months. Little by little people are starting to trust us. Internationally there are still perhaps some doubts with respect to what will happen, but those doubts can only be cleared with time. With every grand prix people will see how dedicated we are.

Q: HRT is undergoing a profound restructuring. What is the path now?

As of now our main objective is to consolidate the structure of our team. We still have to bring in people and determine important roles but that's normal and we are ready for it. From there, we can begin to grow and build a future.

Q: What are the strengths and weaknesses of the team?

Right now the main strength of the team is the people that make it up. There is a good group of professionals, with a lot of desire and willpower and faith in the project. This is very important because the sacrifices that are being made and that will have to be made, are big ones. The major weakness is that the team is still going through a process of change and we are in December and Formula 1 doesn't stop. This is a competition where the deadlines are established and where you're being examined publicly, officially and permanently. That is the main inconvenience for us at this time of restructuring. But one thing is for sure: we will work with maximum effort.

Q: What are HRT's goals in the short, medium and long term?

In the short term the main objective is to consolidate the project and create a strong team in Spain that works, with the technical area in Munich. And of course to have the 2012 car ready for the start of the season to be able to take part in the first race and all the pre-season tests that we can. In the medium term we intend to improve the car and get closer to our rivals than last year, what are our strengths and weaknesses and working to improve at every grand prix. In the long run, with a better car and a solid structure, we will think about the strategy for 2013 and, above all, 2014, when there will be major changes to regulations.

Q: How will the changes affect the team at the start of the season?

The task ahead of us, with the design of the car and change of HQ, is huge. In this respect, HRT is a little bit behind other teams. We will feel the effects of this transformation the team is going through and will have "pay" for it at the start of the season. We're not going to be at the same level as when we finished this past season, where the same team had been running for two years, but we're aware of that. We're taking a step back so that we can take two forward. 2012 will be an important year for us to settle and face a more natural and stable situation in 2013.

Q: Pedro de la Rosa said that one of the main reasons for him to join this project was yourself and Saúl Ruiz de Marcos. How do you assess that?

It makes me very happy that Pedro has trusted so much in us and I hope that we can return his trust with results. As our relationship grows I hope that he feels proud to have made this decision".

Q: At what stage are you regarding the second driver?

We are in advanced talks with several drivers but we can't anticipate anything yet. It's a decision we surely won't make until the start of next year because it's the least urgent thing right now.

Q: The other question is where the team's base will be?

Right now we are working at a provisional base in Valencia until the location of the permanent headquarters is defined. There a few strong options but nothing is decided yet.

Mercedes building for the future in year two

It was clear early in the season the Mercedes W02 was not going to trouble the front runners any more than its predecessor had.

Indeed, unlike last year, Mercedes never made it as far as the podium.

But while there was little to celebrate on the track, the team made several major signings as it prepares for the years ahead.

It has bolstered its technical department with several major signings including Bob Bell (from Renault) Aldo Costa (from Ferrari) and Geoff Willis, who was with the team in its Honda guise five years ago, before they took the disastrous decision of putting Shuhei Nakamoto in charge of design.

While the 2011 car was often the quickest in a straight line, the chassis had a propensity for devouring its tyres early in the season – this was a particularly conspicuous problem at Monaco.

On occasions the team was able to mix it with the likes of McLaren and Ferrari. Nico Rosberg was in superb form in Turkey, qualifying a season-best third on the grid, on his way to finishing fifth after passing Jenson Button.

Schumacher, meanwhile, had the first of several run-ins with Vitaly Petrov, clipping the Renault as it came past him. The pair collided again in Valencia – and again it was Schumacher’s fault.

While Schumacher’s race pace was often impressive, errors such as these proved costly. And they didn’t end with Petrov – he hit Kamui Kobayashi in Silverstone and spun at the Nurburgring.

But on his day there were more convincing signs of the Schumacher of old than there had been last year. Particular at Monza, where he defended his position from Lewis Hamilton to the limit of the rules for lap after lap.

He ran in the top three in Canada until his DRS-equipped rivals came past him on the straights, and climbed from last on the grid to fifth at Spa.

The last driver he passed on that day was his team mate who had been told, not for the first time in 2011, to slow down and save fuel. He had a similar instruction in China, where he had led early on, and ended up falling out of the podium places.

For much of the season Mercedes lacked a credible threat from rival teams behind them, nor a serious chance of beating those ahead of them. So it mattered less if their drivers raced other with increasing ferocity.
    Michael Schumacher, Mercedes, Nürburgring, 2011

    Schumacher was quick but error-prone

Rosberg was particularly unimpressed at spending the Spanish Grand Prix stuck behind his team mate, unable to make progress as Schumacher benefitted from the ‘undercut’ during each of their visits to the pits.

In India a slow pit stop cost Rosberg a place to his team mate at a time when Schumacher was drawing in on his team mate in the points standings. This was uncharacteristic for a team that made the quickest pit stop in seven races this year – more than any other team bar Red Bull.

Rosberg retaliated against the growing threat from his team mate on the first lap in Abi Dhabi. The pair battled furiously as Rosberg reclaimed the place from his team mate he’d lost at the first corner. It was a superb display of hard yet restrained racing between team mates.

But after two consecutive years of finishing fourth, Mercedes will be expecting greater results in 2012. So will Schumacher, as he weighs up whether to extend his comeback beyond the three years he originally signed up with them for.

Williams are confident their 2012 challenger will be ready for first pre-season test at Jerez at the start of February

The Grove-squad are coming off the worst season their history after they picked up just five points and finished ninth in the Constructors' Championship.

The team, though, are determined to bounce back next campaign and they have made various personnel changes with the most noteworthy being Mike Coughlan coming in as technical director.

Coughlan says development on their new car is going well and they are optimistic it will be ready for the first test at the Jerez circuit from February 7, while an upgraded version will be on display at the final test at the Circuit de Catalunya from March 1.

"As we stand at the moment our gearbox and engine installation programme has finished and been tested on the dyno, and will run twice more before Christmas to have covered in excess of 6,000km. All of the rear suspension has been completed so we'll also run that as well," he told Williams' iGNITION magazine.

"The first chassis is completed with a second one not far behind, and we'll shortly start our FIA crash test programme, and all of those tests have been passed already in private testing. We now have a fully-defined car that will be used for system checks, it has a reasonable improvement in downforce and will carry all of the systems that will enable us to go to the first test and be launched. Our aim is then to have an upgraded car for the final pre-season test.

"The car is slated to be delivered to the race shop in mid-January and we'll be ready to go to the first test in early February. The aim is that by the end of January, all the parts that can possibly have been verified have been, and the track testing is purely a verification of that work. There should be enough mileage on the major parts so that if the car stops on track with a fundamental problem, it comes as a surprise. Other than that the testing will focus on improving reliability and the overall aerodynamic performance of the car."

As for their 2011 troubles, Coughlan admits the team's gambles didn't pay off.

"I don't think it's just aerodynamic, I think we made some decisions where effectively we gambled on something which would have cost us performance from a vehicle dynamics point of view, but which would have been outweighed by the aerodynamic gain," he said.

"That obviously didn't pay off - had it done so we would have looked much better this season. You've also got to take into account that the blown floor became more and more prevalent.

"We spent a lot of development time in the wind tunnel looking at how much time a blown floor might have gained us, but ultimately we couldn't blow the floor, so we could say in hindsight that time would have been better spent working on an un-blown floor.

"It's a difficult one because you don't know at the outset what the gains will be, and a lot of time is spent getting to the answer, at which point it might turn out not to have been worth the effort."

Domenicali quits vs Newey -- dijamin bakal seru.
Soalnya dari dulu yg menggagalkan Ferrari dapat juara dunia itu kan dia.

Betul, Massa jadi bulan2an melulu, Alonso doang yg menonjol.
Gw rasa Alonso udah dapat mobil yg bagus cuman strategi Ferrari yg suka aneh.
Contoh nyata jelas adalah di Abu Dhabi 2010.

kadang Massa keliatan cepet sih kyk mau nyalip gitu, tp cm bentar doank abis tu lenyap.

musim ni jg pitstopnya slalu kalah dr mobil laen.
bd bgt dgn dulu yg justru menang berkat pit stop uda biasa.

Mungkin Ferrari lagi ngejar kelebihan di bidang lain, selain pitstop.
Btw, emang benar ya ada gosip Massa mau direplace?

kalo soal maintaining the gap, Ferrari dah kalah jauh sama McLaren.
Liat aja beberapa race, Button masih bisa ngejar ke depan meskipun udah akhir2 race, beda ma Alonso.
Gw yakin bukan Alonso-nya yg gak bisa, pasti ada masalah lain (kalo bukan mobil ya taktik).
