Back calling the shots at McLaren, we pay tribute to 'Ronspeak'

During his three-decade tenure as McLaren Team Principal, Ron Dennis' sometimes complex turn of phrase became affectionately known as 'Ronspeak'. So to mark his return to the CEO role, here are 12 gems uttered over the years by the man himself and our attempts at more straightforward translations...

"Over the coming weeks I intend to undertake a thorough and objective review of each of our businesses with the intention of optimising every aspect of our existing operations, whilst identifying new areas of growth that capitalise on our technologies, and where appropriate further investing in them. During February, I will articulate a new Group strategy and implement the organisational structure best suited to achieving it."
    In other words: I'm back.

    Whitmarsh future in doubt

"When I came into motor racing so many things were a black art. But black art was a cloak for 'we don't really know'. It was intuitive engineering. I decided to make it a science. We will develop science to take away uncertainty to make winning a certainty."
In other words: There's nothing flukey about victory.

"Focus is thought to be good, obsession is thought to be bad. But basically they're the same thing. And then there's ego. Ego is a core ingredient of ambition. Ambition and ego are close bed-fellows. And, like everybody I suppose, I seek happiness. It's an uncomplicated objective. I don't see happiness as laughing or clapping your hands. I see it as the opposite of unhappiness, the opposite of anger, of depression. If you can get into that state of mind, you're going to be far more productive."
In other words: I'm only happy when we're winning.

"Surprisingly for us, the psychological blow of it raining halfway through qualifying in Australia was much greater than we anticipated."
In other words: We didn't see the wet stuff coming.

"I wish Lewis really, really well. He's been nurtured well through his career and I feel none of the emotions that attribute to me."
In other words: Don't believe everything you read in the press.

"Life isn't about one person deciding anything. It's never that way. It's about circumstances. Everybody says: 'Am I bitterly this or bitterly that?' What? I'm a realist."
    In other words: Get real.

"I continue to love the sport of Formula 1 with every fibre of my being."
    In other words: I like F1 - a lot.

"First of all our shareholders have a position, then the board has a position and then Martin has to handle what that position is. It would be totally inappropriate for me to say anything that would undermine Martin's position."
In other words: Know your position.

"I hate shopping. I don't shop, at all. Fortunately my creditworthiness allows for a shop to release quantities of product so I can choose at home."
In other words: They shop, they drop.

"From our perspective, and ours is more qualified because we are not hiding from our inadequacies, it is statistically not borne out that we have huge reliability problems.
In other words: Don't mention unreliability.

"Inevitably you have a greater interest in seeing what he says and how he says it. I am more impressed when it is a pure quote rather than something he is reputed to have said. He is very well put together in the mind."
In other words: He thinks well.

"I used to go to bed with the vacuum cleaner going because my mum wanted the house immaculate when she got up. That's the ethos I grew up with, everything had to be perfect all the time. That's why I am such a pain to live with. I don't want chaos; my homes are my tranquillity bases."
In other words: Wipe your feet before entering.

Caterham signs Kobayashi, Ericsson for 2014 Formula 1 season

Caterham has signed grand prix returnee Kamui Kobayashi and GP2 graduate Marcus Ericsson for the 2014 Formula 1 season.

The deal brings Kobayashi back into F1 after a season with Ferrari's GT programme in the World Endurance Championship.

The 27-year-old Japanese driver had made his F1 debut as stand-in driver for Toyota in late 2009, before racing for Sauber from 2010-12.

"It's a great feeling to be back as an F1 race driver and I'm really pleased it's with Caterham," said Kobayashi.

"Throughout all our discussions I've been very impressed with where they want to take the team, and how much investment has been made already to help them achieve their goals.

"I first visited the factory in Leafield just before Christmas and it's clear how hungry the whole team is to make progress.

"From what I've seen, Caterham now has everything in place to progress this year and for many seasons to come."

Ericsson moves up to F1 after four years in GP2. Sixth in last year's standings was the high point, but he had been expected to fight for the title after replacing reigning champion Davide Valsecchi at DAMS.

The 23-year-old has some F1 experience from 2009, when he drove for the champion Brawn team in the rookie tests after winning the Japanese Formula 3 title.

He is set to become the first Swede to start a grand prix since Stefan Johansson's F1 career ended in 1991.

"This is a very proud day for me and everyone has helped make my F1 dream come true," Ericsson said.

    Marcus Ericsson

"I'll be making the step up to F1 with Caterham in 2014 and I'm already excited about the season ahead, and the first race in Australia in particular."

Kobayashi and Ericsson replace Giedo van der Garde and Charles Pic in the Caterham race seats.

Van der Garde has already secured a move to Sauber as a test and reserve driver.

Caterham's announcement completes the 2014 F1 grid ahead of the start of winter testing at Jerez next Tuesday.

Analysis: Ferrari pressure rising in 2014 Formula 1 season
Ferrari has always faced external pressure to win, but the team is also demanding much more of itself in the 2014 Formula 1 season as top brass tire of underachievement.

After years when the team has failed to back up its bold predictions on-track, there is now a sound basis to Ferrari's claims that things should be better this season.

For beyond simply the all-new 2014 regulations serving to shake up the order, there are internal factors that give its chiefs genuine reasons for optimism.

    A RESTRUCTURING

Ferrari's 2013 F1 campaign was, on the face of it, a disappointment, as the team lost its early-season momentum and fell away in the second half of the year.

That performance slump did not tell the story of the huge reorganisation going on back at its Maranello base.

    Pat Fry

Over the last few years there has been a major ramping up of its simulator and simulation facilities, plus director of engineer Pat Fry (pictured) has instilled a lot of new working processes.

It is the fruits of that work that technical director James Allison has been at pains to praise, following his arrival from Lotus towards the end of last year.

"I have been very fortunate to arrive at Ferrari in a period where I am inheriting a huge amount of foundation work that Pat has done in the last few years," he said recently.

"He has been building up the tools and infrastructure at Ferrari to make it a team that can make it compete right at the front of the grid."

    WINDTUNNEL BOOST

One of Ferrari's main issues in recent years has been its failure to maintain its rate of development during the season.

Part of the cause of that situation has been windtunnel correlation issues, with updates not producing their predicted pace on track.

A major revamp of Ferrari's Maranello windtunnel, which was shut down for a refit but is now back in use, should be a big boost.

    Fernando Alonso, Ferrari

Allison also thinks that the change of aero regulations - specifically relating to exhaust positioning - will help improve matters.

"There are two things of the current [2013] generation of the car that are difficult," he said.

"One is to accurately get the shape of the tyres correct in the windtunnel and the other is to accurately predict where the exhaust will go.

"Up and down the grid, there is a greater or lesser success in getting that correlation to work.

"Ferrari hasn't been bad but I know too we could have been better.

"Ferrari has made a titanic investment in the windtunnel and we are fortunate that we are now using the fruits of that upgrade.

"It will work extremely well in the coming years. So I am very happy about that."

    TITLE TARGET

Although the new turbo rules leave much uncertainty ahead of next week's Jerez test, Ferrari does at least believe it has done everything in its power to hit the ground running.

    Stefano Domenicali

"There are opportunities that we need to make sure that we are taking," explained team principal Stefano Domenicali.

"We have improved a lot of our tools and equipment to make sure that we take all the different things in the best way we can.

"We know it will be a tough challenge, but it will be tough for everyone.

"You know my style - to not say a lot of things and to deal with facts. But it is time to show the level of the skill of our people."

McLaren will be without a title sponsor when it launches its new Formula 1 car on Friday, the team has confirmed.

But despite hoping to have replaced Vodafone by this stage, the Woking-based outfit insists the finances of its racing operations will not be hampered by the absence of a main backer.

McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale (pictured) told AUTOSPORT that, due to the support of a host of sponsors, the team heads into 2014 with a larger budget than ever.

"The McLaren Group is a private company, so we don't have to show a profit every year in the same way as PLCs do," said Neale.

"The McLaren Group has sometimes declared a very significant profit in the past, but we don't have to do so if it doesn't suit our strategic objectives so to do.

"Our shareholders - Ron Dennis, Mansour Ojjeh and Mumtalakat - don't receive dividends. They're more interested in growth.

"So, although we won't be announcing a new title partner when we digitally launch our new MP4-29 on Friday, we're in very good shape financially.

"We've got a large number of brilliant partners - Mobil 1, Santander, GSK, Johnnie Walker, Hilton, Hugo Boss, Tag Heuer and SAP - and they all share our ambition and commitment to achieve success.

"As a result, McLaren will have a larger operational budget in 2014 than we've had in any previous year."

McLaren originally planned to announce a new title sponsor on December 2, but those plans fell through.

It then hoped that there would be an announcement at the launch of its 2014 car but this will not now happen.

It is understood the team remains in talks with several major companies about potential title sponsorship deals, although the arrival of Honda in 2015 is believed to include significant commercial backing.

Kamui Kobayashi spurned Ferrari for 2014 Caterham Formula 1 seat

Kamui Kobayashi was so eager to return to Formula 1 race action this year that he turned his back on an expanded Ferrari deal and is driving for Caterham for free.

The Japanese has secured an F1 comeback for 2014, as team-mate to rookie Marcus Ericsson.

Having failed to find a drive last year, he competed for Ferrari in the World Endurance Championship as well as taking part in F1 demonstration events.

Speaking at Caterham's Leafield headquarters on Tuesday, Kobayashi revealed that he had been offered another Ferrari contract for sportscars - as well as an expanded role on the F1 team that included simulator work.

But despite the security of such an offer, he was so keen to get back to grand prix racing that he did everything he could to persuade Caterham owner Tony Fernandes to take him when they first met in December last year.

"I am 27, I still need more to race in F1," said the former Toyota and Sauber driver. "That is why I chose to come back to F1.

"Ferrari offered me another contract, and Stefano [Domenicali] is not happy I didn't take it. But it is only my decision to be here.

"I took a risk in my life but it is important for me.

"Caterham needs some different energy and my experience is quite useful for this team. We'll see what I can do. I am quite confident."

With Caterham making no secret of the fact that it required drivers to bring financial support, Kobayashi has helped deliver a package that includes £1 million worth of funding that was raised when he asked fans to help him at the end of 2012.

Beyond that, Kobayashi also wanted to emphasise to Fernandes how eager he was by making no pay demands at all.

"I'm driving for free, it is my decision," he said. "It is just my approach. I want to do this job. This appeals to Tony, this was the message to Tony and he is happy about that.

"I want to help the team. I don't care about the money. I want to be successful in my life and I want to bring the team back successfully in my goals."

Force India become the first F1 team to reveal their new car

Force India has become the first team to reveal its 2014 Formula 1 car by releasing an image of the Mercedes-engined VJM07.

The new car features the low nose mandated by the regulations, as well as the new tailpipe at the rear as part of measures designed to prevent exhaust-blown downforce.

The image does not reveal any dramatic design innovations, but it will not be until the car first appears at next week's Jerez test that any conclusions can be drawn about its technical merits.

"Almost every single part is a new design, from the front wing right back to the diffuser," said technical director Andrew Green.

"The genetics of the VJM07 still lie in the 2013 car, but we've had to achieve the same results in a slightly different way.

"It's been a massive job to accommodate all the changes to the power unit - it's the biggest change I've witnessed in the sport since I started in 1990.

"Cooling has been the biggest challenge with most of last summer taken up trying to understand the cooling requirements of the power unit, and how best to optimise it in the chassis."

    NEW LIVERY

The car features a new colour scheme, with much of the white colouring removed in favour of black.

This modified colour scheme replaces the white, orange and green livery used from 2009-13.

"The VJM07 looks stunning and the new livery reflects the way Sahara Force India is evolving," said Mallya.

Vijay Mallya F1 Force India 2014

"I've always believed our cars have been the most eye-catching, but adding black as a main colour gives us a fierce new look."

The new livery also incorporates some new sponsors, with telecommunications brand Claro - which previously backed McLaren and Sauber - coming on board thanks to Sergio Perez's arrival at the team.

Mallya believes that this shows the team is growing and that the coming season could be its best in F1.

"It's been a busy winter for us on the technical and commercial front," said Mallya.

"When I founded the team my first ambition was to launch the first Indian team on the grid, but the next stage in our evolution is to develop a global brand.

"I think that ambition is reflected in the partners we are working with and our world class driver line-up.

"It certainly feels as though there is the potential for 2014 to be our strongest season yet."

Tech insights: what the VJM07 reveals about F1 2014 designs

Force India's 3D rendering of its new VJM07 Formula 1 car, released on Wednesday, sheds some light on 2014 designs while hiding much of the real detail.

AUTOSPORT's technical expert CRAIG SCARBOROUGH analysed what we can learn from the image.

    NOSE

We can deduce that Force India has followed the so called 'finger' or 'anteater' nose design.

This is where the new rules demand a low nose tip, so the nosecone ends up with a finger-like extension that reaches down to meet the mandatory 185mm nose tip height.

But the final design appears to be sleeker than expectations, with the finger merged into the wedge-shaped upper nose.

The front wing is also mounted to the finger extension and not the upper nose section.

Despite the sleeker design, the result is still likely to look startling at first. It is worth noting the team has painted the finger extension black to blend into the new black based livery.

    STEPPED CHASSIS

Another design feature likely to be common across the grid is the stepped chassis. This is where the rules mount the front bulkhead 10cm lower down to help align with the lower nose tip.

As the aerodynamicists want the chassis as high as possible to send more air to the rear of the car, the bulkhead is down at the lower height, but rises back up 10cm to create a high flat top to the front of the chassis.

The resulting step is cleaned up with a vanity panel.

    COOLING

Now fitted with a Mercedes 1.6-litre V6 turbo and enhanced Energy Recovery Systems, the Force India has a far greater cooling demand, although the sidepods from this angle do not look disproportionately large.

Perhaps aiding the size of the sidepods is an additional inlet over the roll hoop. This probably feeds an oil cooler for the gearbox.

    FUEL TANK

One detail that is clearly apparent is the size of the fuel tank. With 100kg of fuel for the race the tank only needs to hold two-thirds of last year's capacity.

The split lines on the bodywork around the roll hoop suggest the team has dramatically shortened the length of the monocoque in this area.

    EXHAUST

As the 2014 rules demand a single, central exhaust outlet, the sidepods have lost their Coanda exhaust outlets. This makes the coke bottle shape of the bodywork much slimmer.

The exhaust now exits out of the tail of the engine cover, roughly in line with the join in the green and black coloured panels of the tail.

    REAR WING

Rear wings are trimmed for 2014 with no beam wing and a slightly shallower top rear wing.

Although none of the wing detail can be seen, the team has added more slots in the vertical leading edge of the endplate, which aids airflow through the rear wing for more downforce.

Another feature not evident in the picture is the means of mounting the rear wing to the chassis.

The loss of the beam wing means the wing can be either mounted to the diffuser or supported on a pylon. The latter option does not appear to be on the this image.

Williams release first front-on shot of 2014 F1 car and unveil the FW36 'anteater' nose

The distinctive new look of F1's new era is finally revealed

Williams have become the first team to reveal a front-on image of a 2014 car and the unusual-looking 'anteater' nose that is poised to become a widespread feature on the new-generation cars.

On Wednesday Force India had unexpectedly initiated launch season by releasing a picture of their striking new VJM07, however the picture was only the side-on view of the car.

But on Thursday morning Williams went one step further by releasing a CGI picture of their all-new FW36, decked out in interim all-blue livery, when viewed from the front, in turn revealing the ungainly protruding nose tip design - which has already been likened to an anteater or hook - that most teams are expected to adopt in line with the new lower nose height parameters.

In addition to the widespread overhaul of the sport's powertrain rules for the new season, the front of the nose has been lowered from a height of 550mm to 185mm as a safety measure to avoid the possibility of cars becoming airborne in an accident.

The sport's leading designers had warned that the most efficient aerodynamic solution, which maximises airflow under the nose, was unlikely to be particularly pretty and Williams' launch pictures arguably confirm that.

Aesthetic talking points aside, however, and the FW36 represents an important car in Williams' illustrious history after the Grove-based outfit endured the joint-worst ever season in 2013 when they scored just five points and finished ninth in the Constructors' Championship.

But hopes are high for an improved campaign in F1's new era after the mid-season signing of Pat Symonds to the role of Chief Technical Officer was followed by five key technical arrivals from leading rival teams over the winter.

"I'm confident that we'll be closer to the front aerodynamically than we were last year," declared Symonds.

"Our ambition for the year ahead is to have a strong 2014 season."

After two seasons back running Renault engines, Williams have also switched to Mercedes power for 2014 and Symonds said the team had been "very impressed" with the German manufacturer so far.

"Their professionalism and commitment have been notable and we're as confident as we can be that the power unit will be competitive," he added.

Williams announced last weekend that they had already fired the new challenger up at their factory, one of the first teams believed to have done so, while the outfit have also already confirmed their run plan for next week's Jerez test with Valtteri Bottas and new signing Felipe Massa.

"The build of the new car has gone remarkably smoothly," Symonds admitted.

"But it's been a challenge to get the car down to the weight limit. It's been achievable, but it hasn't been easy because the new power unit is heavier than the outgoing V8."

As is the case with the teaser photos, Williams have also already confirmed that they will run with all-blue interim colour scheme at the opening test ahead of what is anticipated to be a later livery launch ahead of the racing season. Pastor Maldonado's winter departure to Lotus means that the FW36 will not carry branding from PDVSA in 2014, speculation having pointed to a potential title sponsor tie-up with drinks firm Martini.
